I like Tom Selleck as an actor but I think he is better suited in programmes like Magnum.
He appears to struggle with the character, perhaps overacting, He is not of the calibre of the likes of actors such as Wayne, Eastwood, Douglas, Scott, Stewart in this genre.
The movie is pretty routine and predictable and offers no surprises. If you want something for a lazy wet afternoon, this is it.

Paul Cable (Tom Selleck)returns after three years fighting for the Confederacy in the Civil War to his family.He decides to take them home to Arizona to a homestead that he had purchased years before.What he finds are Union sympathisers,in the shape of David and Keith Carradine,believing Cable to be dead who have settled on the land and have no intention of giving it up.Sensing threachery all around him but with the support of his strong willed and sharpshooting wife Martha (the excellent Suzy Amis)he decides to make a stand.
Based on Elmore Leonard's novel, this is a beautifully rendered,fast moving western saga with some modern stylings but never forgetting where it's heart is and played with gusto by all concerned.
Look out for the child actor playing Selleck's son.
