Wicked!
Review date: 2008-04-04 Rating: 10 out of 10

Once again I find myself watching Harold and Kumar as I slowly drug myself into oblivion, on an inevitable downward spiral of stupidity as I slowly plan my suicide bombing in London.

This film is just brilliant, every part of it is absolutely hilarious. Even the bit at the beginning where the New Line Cinema logo came up had me convulsed with laughter, the words just looked so funny.

The only problem I have with this film is that one of the blokes playing the lead characters looks quite obviously Chinese but in the film everyone says he's indian. Was that part of the joke? It went right over my head.

Another funny, silly comedy

The story here is about a kind of modern odd couple - Harold (John Cho) is the tidy and somewhat repressed guy, while Kumar (Kal Penn) is the messy and slightly obnoxious one. After a night of relaxation, these two get the munchies and have no option but to head out on a bizarre journey to find some White Castle burgers, and they get themselves into all sorts of comical scrapes along the way.

Both of the leads are very funny here. John Cho, who had a small role in American Pie, makes for a sympathetic put-upon guy; while Kal Penn appears to be channeling his Van Wilder co-star Ryan Reynolds as the jerk it's okay to like. They have a great chemistry together, and there are all manner of laughs to be had from seeing these two drag each other in and out of strange situations. It's also nice to see what is basically a generic comedy with two non-white leads. Not only does it give the film a unique feel, but there's quite a bit of humour that plays with racial stereotypes without ever being offensive or cheap.

Adding to the humour is a string of very funny cameos, including Fred Willard, Anthony Anderson, Ryan Reynolds, and Jamie Kennedy. Funniest of all is a running joke involving former Dougie Howser MD, Neil Patrick Harris, as himself.

I laughed quite a bit during this one, which is really what a good comedy is all about. The raccoon attack, the Wilson Phillips singalong, and the most hilarious romantic montage I'll ever see all made this one worthwhile, but there's plenty more besides to keep you chuckling. Whole-heartedly recommended to anyone looking for ninety minutes of low-brow comedy fun.
