DVD Description
A thwarted Lady Maud runs off to her solicitor to start divorce proceedings and that gives Sir Giles his bright idea-why not run the proposed bypass for the area through their very own Cleene Gorge, thereby wrecking Lady Maud's ancestral home and copping rather a lot of compensation from the government to boot? Witness the frolics of the bumbling dundridge - the Y-front clad man from the ministry, Sir Giles' versatile Mrs Forthby - Mediterranean harlot and naughty schoolgirl extraordinaire, not forgetting Blott himself, gardener and mystery man, casting his enigmatic eye over the eccentricities of the great British aristocracy... Starring, George Cole, Geraldine James, David Suchet, Simon Cadell and Julia McKenzie
good, but lacks features and not the original 1985 release!
Review date: 2008-04-04 Rating: 6 out of 10
Hello, I do own this DVD, and for the money I paid to get it, felt let down!
First, the transfer from tape to DVD is okay, but could have been better, there are no special features on any of the DVD's.
Second, from what I have been told, the version on these DVD's I own is an edited version, bear with me, My mother watch the original, when I was only 2 years old, and she says when they repeated in the early ninties, they edited a fair amount out, and that is the version I have purchased, the early nineties version, not the original mid eighties version.
So if you own this and feel something is missing, your probably right.
Overall a Good comedy from the BBC, but poor transfer to DVD, limits my rating to 3!

excellent and depressingReview date: 2007-05-20 Rating: 10 out of 10prefect screen play for one of tom sharpes books.excellent acting from a cast given interesting parts to play.funny but not silly.carries the plot all the way through series.probably the best series by the bbc, with yes ministers and channel fours drop the dead donkey.
depressing thing is this blott was first shown in 1985.and there is nothing near to touch it now.progress.Is this the best-ever BBC comedy drama?Review date: 2006-10-09 Rating: 10 out of 10Over 20 years old and funnier than virtually anything that has been in the cinema or on TV for the past decade. Absolutely brilliant with David Suchet striding through the story as the manic, demonically ingenious and yet devoted servant of 'Lady Mowd'. There isn't a single character in this wonderful drama that doesn't work -with Simon Cadell perfectly cast as the neurotically pedantic government minister.
Right from episode 1 and the courtroom riot, right through to the end where the army tries to storm the manor gatehouse, the farce is built up with relentless energy.
A total triumph and absolutely unmissable - it makes all the current TV comedy drama series look insipid. One of Aunty Beeb's all-time best series!Review date: 2006-09-27 Rating: 10 out of 10I haven't actually bought the DVD yet, but I saw Blott in 1985 and watched the entire series again in 1986 and 1993 when the BBC re-ran it. I also hired it earlier this year. David Suchet was brilliant as Blott - you could see how he later gained the role of "Poirot" - and Geraldine James a superb Lady Maud. George Cole was spot-on as the ultra-slimy Sir Giles, as was the late Simon Cadell in the part of complete nincompoop Mr Dundridge.
And of course, Julia McKenzie. Mrs Forthby, and all her associated characters, which included "Nanny Whip" among others, were a far cry from her other role of the time, in the Thames TV sitcom "Fresh Fields".
Blott's house (The gatekeeper's lodge) was constructed in Blaise Woods, Bristol in April 1984 and demolished within the storyline.
One of the best comedy mini-seriesReview date: 2006-01-29 Rating: 10 out of 10Sir Giles Lynchwood, Conservative MP, schemes to have a motorway extend over his houses and get rich in the process. His wife with the help of Blott fortifies the gatehouse to repel the construction crew. It is much more complex with subplots. You have to see to believe and them you may not. Many videos do not live up to the expectations of the book. This one may even surpass the Tom Sharpe's book. All of the characters fit and all the irony hits you in the face. This was my first encounter with David Suchet (Blott). And you will recognize all the other major players including Geraldine James (Lady Maud Lynchwood). Now the complete series on DVD. You need to carve out the better part of a day before starting to watch because you will not be able to stop until the end.
A man’s home is his castle.
