Amazon.co.uk Review

When you start watching Racing Stripes, you may not be prepared for how unbelievably cute a young zebra is. A travelling circus accidently abandons an adorably helpless zebra in the middle of Kentucky on a stormy night. Fortunately, the wee zebra is found by Nolan Walsh, a brilliant horse trainer who's given up his calling after a riding accident that killed his wife. His daughter Channing names the zebra Stripes and, before you know it, Stripes has grown to young adulthood and is aching to race at a nearby track. Thus begins a fairly formulaic triumph-over-adversity tale combined with talking animals--but Racing Stripes understands its formula and executes it without any pretensions. It doesn't hit the bullseye struck by Babe (an earlier triumph-over-adversity tale combined with talking animals), and there are bad puns and gags aplenty, but Greenwood's solid presence gives the movie an unexpected emotional fullness. Featuring a bizarre assortment of voices for the animals, including Whoopi Goldberg, Dustin Hoffman, Frankie Muniz, Mandy Moore, Joe Pantoliano (as a Mafioso pelican), Steve Harvey, David Spade, and Snoop Dogg. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Synopsis

A cute zebra foal gets separated from his circus and is adopted by a horse trainer (Bruce Greenwood) in this live action, talking animal tale. Stripes (voiced by Frankie Muniz) becomes adopted by the trainer's tomboy daughter (Hayden Panettiere)--an aspiring jockey--who subsequently wants to race him in the big leagues. Setbacks include her dad's over-protectiveness (he lost her mom in a horse-racing accident), and the fact that Stripes is a zebra and not a normal horse. Though all the other thoroughbreds turn their noses at this odd-looking interloper, a wizened old pony (Dustin Hoffman) steps in as trainer, and it's time to start prepping for the big race. Other animal characters include a mob hit-pelican (voice of Joe Pantoliano), a nurturing goat (voice of Whoopi Goldberg), a rooster (voice of Jeff Foxworthy), and a hound (Snoop Dogg). Mandy Moore does the voice of Stripes' comely mare love interest. Steve Harvey and David Spade are a pair of trash-talking horseflies. Adults will cherish some sly references to older movies, while the kids should get a lot out of the mix of real animals, nonstop gags, and an uplifting message about the importance of not judging a horse by its stripes. Though set in Kentucky, the film was actually lensed in South Africa, with real zebras. M. Emmet Walsh is a welcome addition as a loveable old codger and Wendie Malick is the evil race track owner.

A great family film
Review date: 2006-04-18 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is wonderful family viewing for both young and old (and even those in-between!) It is both a touching and yet very funny tale of a Zebra who wants to be a race horse. (Why not!) With Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle) as the voice of 'Stripes' and an all star cast backing him this film cannot fail to please. You'll laugh until it hurts at the antics of the Flies, Buzz and Scuzz, and a Crane named 'Goose' who's on the run from the 'Mob'. I'd most certainly reccomend it for 'after Sunday Lunch' viewing when the whole family are together. It gets better every time you watch it!

Wounderful

This dvd is excellent. we borrowed it on dvd rental from amazon a couple of months ago and two days ago I bought it. It's just so wounderful. The animals are all so cute (I really like Stripes' tack) and although the voices aren't exactly how I imagined, they say the write things.
It's such a lovely family tale that has a lot of good lines for young kids and a lot of sweet pictures for anyone (ofcorse, the lines can still be funny to teenage/adult/senior citezens but younger children enjoy them most).
Lovely, adorable, wounderful, sweet ... EXELLENT!

Its no Babe !
Review date: 2006-02-14 Rating: 4 out of 10

I was looking forward to this film - the great write-ups here on Amazon and glowing reviews elsewhere. BUT, its formula stuff - take the Babe story and add some "racing" ... there is no depth here, there is no story momentum, the characters do not work - you get the impression the actors dont believe in the project. Where is the enthusiasm? Where are the jokes? OK, so its aiming at children, but ever since Lion King, we have come to expect cartoons to work effortlessly on several levels. This one doesnt. And they use two different species of zebra to play the main role; one with black stripes and one with brown and black stripes - the kids noticed this!! Come on

Great family viewing

Was expecting a cartoon, so this was a refreshing surprise. My 9 and 6 year old and me really enjoyed this. Good yarn, and some nice humour. Very well done.
