A Sicilian Message or just a guitar blast?
Review date: 2007-09-04 Rating: 8 out of 10

Zakk Wylde will always be entwined with Ozzy's leisurely output of music, but he is a true old-fashioned axeman. A mountain of a man, with a personality and big slab of Les Paul wood to match. Mafia is Wylde's 2005 production. Perhaps not as good as AFB, perhaps better depending on your feelings towards good ol' fashioned hard rock. "Been a Long Time" and "Fire it up" are the real gems on this offering : big guitars and snarling vocals telling you the story. Yet this contains some very tasteful stuff too. "Dirt on the Grave" sounds like it could be a right belter, but in fact it's a slow and haunting ballard. "Forever Down" another bashing of the guitar - "Say what you will" and "Death March" are more of the same. Getting the idea? This man is serious about his music not being like Whitesnake. Belting.

Zakk Wylde, Ozzy's guitar weilding partner, suprises metallers worldwide with another-brilliant-album. Mafia is heavy, engrossing and meldodic-within the depths of the album are the classics fire it up, suicide messiah, spread your wings and the somewhat moving in this river (a memorial song to Zakks good friend Dimebag of Pantera).In my point of view Black Label gets...less aggressive with time-a transition that results in a slightly yet heavy but more musically diverse album, it seems to me that as time goes on Black Label become, in a way, softer but far more diverse at the same time, this being one of Black labels current, latter day albums , is far technically supeior to earlier albums (not necesserally better though). All in all this is a remarkably good album....buy it.

The Best Yet!!!
Review date: 2006-03-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

Black Label Society have hit their peak with Mafia and here's hoping they can keep up this level for years to come. What Zakk Wylde's done with this album is simple. He's created a a hard rocking, true heavy metal, head banging album that most "Hard Rock" bands around these days would be jealous of.
The opening track 'Fire it up' sets the tone of the album. Cracking riffs, crunching bass & drums & trademark Zakk solos throughout mean you can't help love this. It's not all heavy, non-stop action though. There's the usual Zakk ballads in here and also a fitting tribute to the late Layne Staley of Alice in Chains. As great as the tracks are on this, if you can get your hands on the version that includes the bonus track 'I Never Dreamed' as the last song, you'll discover one of Zakk's greatest ever songs, which includes 2 guitar solos, the second of which could be the greatest since Lynard Skynard's 'Free Bird'. Fans of Zakk Wylde/Black Label Society will love this. Fans of true Heavy Rock/Metal will love this.

BLS at their best.

This is undoubtedly my favourite Black Label Society album. There's so much variety on this CD, that whether or not you're a fan of heavy metal, there'll be a few tracks on this CD.

Myself, I like a wide range of (guitar) music, so this album was fantastic. There are loads of great songs, so it's hard to pick out the best. For me, I would have to say:

* Suicide Messiah
* Dirt on the Grave
* Electric Hellfire
* What's in You
* In This River

Are essential listening for any guitarist, metal fan or rock fan.

It's an essential album as well - you must have this in your collection!
