Sheer bliss!
Review date: 2008-10-25 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is one of my favourite musicals of all time. I'm pleased to see that this latest version offers a choice of ratio as I am fed up with squinting at my old extra widescreen version. I shall be putting this on my wish list for Christmas! My daughter and I have been watching this film for years and just recently she spotted something odd. For trivia lovers everywhere, have a look at the scene where the brothers are pacing up and down while Millie gives birth to her baby upstairs. At the very back Ephraim is pacing up and down - except it isn't him but some random guy we've never seen before. Each time he stops pacing he is conveniently hidden by the stepladder so you can't see his face. Presumably, Ephraim took the day off and they dragged this poor bloke in to make up the numbers! It's no good, I really must get out more! Anyway, enjoy!

A wonderful feel good movie
Review date: 2008-02-13 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film has been on my wish list for quite a while, I just remembered that it was a wonderful film, full of great set pieces, good songs & beautiful orchestrations, my only regret is that I didnt buy this earlier.

I bought this because of the two versions of the film, for the commentary from the director Stanley Donen, and for the documentary presented by Howard Keel himself, where everyone recall's how this supposed 'B' picture at MGM eventually became a huge hit that is still as enjoyable today.

As a film it is tight, there is no real filler the story moves at a good pace and it all falls together beautifully, as Stanley Donen says in his commentary, it was a film made by great professional's from top to bottom and it shows. I can only wish he had got his wish and shot it all on location in Oregon instead of on the back lot at MGM, that would only have enhanced this wonderful movie.

Just get it, you won't regret it. Bless your beautiful hide....

Best Version

I firstly bought the 2001 version of this 1954 film but was very disappointed in the cinemascope aspect ratio (only filling half my TV screen, even with the zoom enhancement).

In my opinion, this 2 Disc Special Edition is FAR, FAR better. You have the choice of watching either the 1:85 alternate widescreen version or the cinemascope 2:55 version - even this fitted my screen better than the 2001 one. You also have a lot of extra special features.

I would highly recommend purchasing this '2 for the price of 1' version of a very enjoyable film with some great songs.

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers [Two Dics Set]

This two disc set offers both the wide screen and cinema scope versions of the film.
At the time of making the film, to ensure the best presentation in cinemas that did not have the equipment to show the new cinemascope process two versions of the film were made simultaneously.
This two disc version includes both films, which have sound and vision beautifully restored.
Also included are many extras, The original theatre trailers, The 1954 Radio City Premiere, Behind the scenes Documentary hosted by Howard Keel , and lots more.
This DVD set is a real must have for any fan of Hollywood musicals.
