Technical Disaster
Review date: 2008-01-07 Rating: 2 out of 10
This is a transfer of a 1954 Cinemascope film shot in Eastmancolor and recorded in 4 track stereo. It was great fun and technically polished when first released. This 'new'release alleges that is has been digitally restored. The colour is dreadful, the image is blurred and the sound is quite terrible. Also it is listed on Amazon as being Region 1. It is however stated to be formatted for world wide distribution on the DVD case. There are digital artefacts galore. There is no menu. All in all this is a slipshod transfer of a print that is on its last legs. The film itself is of great interest from many points of view but goodness, how on earth was such a technical disaster issued for sale.Surely a good print exists somewhere! As movies lose copyright then clapped out prints, such as this, appear to attract 'buffs' anxious and curious to see the highways and byways of film history - and Broadway in this instance. Digital restoration! Humbug! Avoid this like the plague.
