Baldy Coppers Do The Office
Review date: 2008-08-29 Rating: 8 out of 10

Comedy - like music - is very much up to ones own tastes, and what one individual may find hysterical, another may just find as nauseating as American sit-coms !! My own tastes tend to lean me towards such programs as Father Ted, Steptoe And Son', The Detectives, etc, but that said, I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed this 3 disc, 3 series, 19 episode, DVD.

I didn't see this series when the BBC first broadcast it, and did not take an interest in it until a lesser UK satellite station ran it at a later date. I decided immediately that it was the kind of humour that appealed to me, and sought out the DVD on a well known auction site and High Street retailer. However, the initial price of £26 put me off, so it was not until the price was halved that I picked it up - mostly due to my satellite decoder packing up if I'm honest.

For those people who have never seen the show, it is very much like a police version of the hit TV show `The Office'. Following cross-dressing, delusions of grandeur D.I. Beach and his rag-tag collection of penis lengthening, S & M, disco dancing, balding officers, the TV crew film the everyday lives of so-called regular police-men in their day-to-day duties.

I have to say that this is one series - in my own opinion - that got funnier as the show went on. I though the first series was OK, the second good, but by the third series I felt the script writers had pretty much got it spot-on. My favourite episode have to be Operation Snowball and Jubilee. Indeed, I have to think how the Equal Opportunity and Race Relation Boards didn't try to get the series cancelled at times.

I'd rate the series as 4 overall, but series one - 3, series two 4 and series three a side-splitting 5. Definitely worth an investment.

Sorry - not funny...
Review date: 2008-03-09 Rating: 2 out of 10

I have read the gushing reviews for Operation Good Guys on Amazon and Love Film so rented it to see what the fuss was about. I was excited at the comparisons to The Office and similar improvisational shows such as Curb etc. Unfortunately it is nowhere near as good as I had hoped. In fact it's terrible.

If you compare it to something like the US version of the office which has as good a script & acting as anything on TV then it's just not good enough. The acting is far too hammy and the whole thing is very British and underwhelming. If you listen to Down The Line, Paul Whitehouse & Charlie Higson's radio 4 show - that's how improvisational comedy should be done. Operation Good Guys has no edge, no comedy and no style. It's not even BBC3 3 Pints Of Lager level - and that's terrible. Yuk.

Series of laughter and total quality

Before the boring and mundane series of The Office, there was Operation Good Guys. This DVD box set is just written to perfection. It is so funny that I cannnot stop watching it. The first series for me is the least funny of the three, but at the same time superbly written and excecuted. The jokes and mayhem just get better and better in the next two series.

A Pioneer of Mockumentary,a unique watch !
Review date: 2006-12-18 Rating: 6 out of 10

This comedy disguised as a police documentary is a great and unique watch!
At first when I saw this on TV, I instantly clicked with it and thought it was great idea.
I think it was the first mockumentary style comedy I saw, probably not as polished/sharp as the legendary Office, but still a great watch none the less.

The main thing is it's audience will probably be very selective , because although there are some great laughs to be found in this box set ... there are alot of bouts of boredom ..... maybe one of it's downfalls of using this format, is that sometimes they stuck so closely to it, at times it almost comes off as boring as a documentary.... but luckily it pulls itself out of that trap by coming up with the goods at the right moments.

Unfortunatly even considering what I've said above .....the atmosphere of the show is somewhat tainted in season 2 and 3 because of the addition of a laughter track. The style of the show was done so well, that before the addition of this : one could indeed mistake it for a real documentary. It's not a big distraction , it just makes you think it would have been better without the laughter track , especially considering some of the funniest moments are in series 2 and 3.

Although they did seem to go abit more crazy/out of controll in later episodes with the addition of music videos/trailers ... but still funny none the less.

You'll enjoy the antics of these misfit Police Officers , especially with odd characters like Bones and Mark Kemp. Also Seargeant Ash and D.I. Beech seem to have great comedic chemistry together. All in all one might to call this a somewhat British Version of Police Academy .... well if one had to loosely compare it to something ... in mockumentary format of course.

Anyway overall, this is something fans of the Office might enjoy.
But as people the Office seems abit like Marmite ..... then Operation Good Guys is alot like Marmite.
If you didn't click with the Office, this is even harder to click with.

But overall I give it an average rating even though I find it very amusing, but I have a feeling for alot of people it won't be their cup of tea.

'Beware of the Pig!'

Caught this on TV few years ago and it's the funniest thing I've seen in ages. It's a fly on the wall comedy doc (before The Office, by the way) and it's just fantastic. Don't think, just buy.
