Amazon.co.uk Review

There are three remarkable issues that the release of Devil's Playground raises. The first is that, as this is Billy Idol's first album in over a decade, there's the implication that the world's original cuddly punk popster was releasing albums well into the 1990s (who knew?). The second is that Billy Idol, as the aforementioned cuddly punk popster, actually had a lot more in common with 80s American poodle rockers like Bon Jovi and Motley Crue than anything to do with the UK's punk scene. The third (and arguably most important) is that Mr Idol has quite a mischievous sense of humour--the lyrics for "Plastic Jesus" and "Yellin' at the Christmas Tree" are genuinely funny, and not in an ironic, so bad they're good, way. And though he looks a bit worse for wear on the album's sleeve, and though his voice has changed greatly in the years since his 1980s heyday, Devil's Playground is a rather entertaining rock album. "World Comin' Down" is a proper, jump-around-the-room rocker, while "Scream" has as much swagger as anything he's ever done. And it's a pace and standard that's kept up for most of Devil's Playground. Much of the album's success is down to the licks of guitarist Steve Stevens--Idol's long-time partner sounds better than ever on this reunion album, and this could be the start of many mutually fruitful collaborations. Those who still love Billy Idol will probably argue that he's always sounded like this, but for those of us who best remember his 80s hits, Devil's Playground is a rock & roll revelation. --Robert Burrow

OMG, when Billy said he was back coming at you ... he wasn't wrong! As a fan for 23 years, I have waited 12 years for this and now it's here? Well ..the whole of DP rocks! From the softer tones of 'Lady Do or Die' and 'Cherie' to the raunchy punches of 'Scream' and 'World Comin' Down' you will not be disappointed. All i can say is go and buy it whether you are a new Idol fan or an Idol fan from the past, young or old, you will find he doesn't disappoint .... like he says in 'Super Overdrive' "Does he still have the magic? Yes he does". He most certainly does. I have been fortunate enough this year to finally see Billy play live 3 times (within 4 days)when he toured the UK, he and the band (Steve Stevens - guitars, Brian Tichy - Drums/percussion and guitar, Stephen McGrath - Bass, Derek Sherinian -keyboards and guitar) absolutely rocked at the gigs, all the new songs mixed in well with the older ones and Billy's voice still belts out well with that curled lip, growl and sexy manouvers .... how can u resist the temptation to listen to him more, more, more and all night long! I for one am going out to buy another copy before I wear this one out, it gets even better and better with each play ....... I rest my case.

Great Album that gets better with every listen

Long time fan of Billy, I was unsure of how I would receive this. The last VH1 Album was just an up-to-date of old classics-done Damn well though. The first listen was only good, with some strange songs and some good rockers.
Then on the second & subsequent listens I started to realise just how good this Album is, with typical Billy songs plus some really good humour (Plastic Jesus & Yelling...) Great to have ya back, especially with Steve (who I still reckon is only at 6/10 of his vast capabilities).
I can really recommend this!

Rebel with a clue!!
Review date: 2005-04-04 Rating: 10 out of 10

This album has been a long time in the making, but boy was it worth it, few would have believed he still had it in him, but the energy, the snarling, leering vocals are still there and the songs are strong and catchy with a sense of melody and passion prevalent throught the 13 tracks on offer..

The whole album is very good, and well worth investing your hard earned dosh...at 50 Billy has never sounded so bad, yet so good!! I can't wait for the tour to support the album, live he is going to kick ass with these tunes, so good on Billy for releasing a very good rock album which has been a long time comin..

Even Better than Before

Billy's back!! He may be almost 50, but this is by far the best CD I've heard this year. In terms of Billy's previous albums, I reckon this is the best. He has been away for 10 years and hasn't lost his power or class.

There isn't a dud on the album - even the Christmas song "yellin' at the Xmas Tree" is brilliant. All of today's 'Angry Poppets' need to hear how the master can snarl and put power into all his songs.

I bought this in the hope that it would be OK - I loved it so much I had to put this review on the Internet!
