I must admit i was a bit let down with this set,i know they are old,but with all the reviews i thought i would get copies like the ultimate james bond set,all the white dots taken away.but the white dots and lines are still there,i suppose they do explain this in the restoration docs(i have still to watch these),however,to get the films with scenes put back in and the added 'war bonds' extras,it will be good to see them as they were first shown.these are great films for all to watch.we are having a sherlock holmes weekend, these will be projector shown and it will be a great fun weekend.even if you are not a fan try these you will love the fims.

Perfect edition to have-- excellently remasteredReview date: 2008-01-01 Rating: 10 out of 10I live in the U.S., but bought this here because the price was so much less than the US version. In the U.S., this version costs $119
It is an absolute beautiful edition. The films are completely remastered and so clear, they look almost brand new. And, they are packaged beautifully and include several postcard-sized miniature movie posters.
I became a Holmes fan in high school when I read all of the Doyle stories. It wasn't until only several years ago, however, that I was introduced to Jeremy Brett's version of Holmes. Thank goodness my husband was a fan, otherwise I don't think I would have ever even seen them! After watching each of those several times, I had to go back and see Basil Rathbone's Holmes. Although he's the definitive Holmes for many, many fans, I still prefer Jeremy Brett. However, I do think that Rathbone should be credited for bringing back the popularity of Holmes to an entirely new audience in the twentieth century.
Only 2 of the Rathbone stories are taken from the Doyle canon. The other films are WWII stories with the Greatest Detective breaking up Nazi spyrings and mobilizing the citizens of England during their greatest fight (well, greatest fight next to the current one going on against Muslim terrorists who are now a fifth column in the UK-- but that's another matter entirely-- maybe we need to see some new Holmes films breaking up terror cells. Oh, but I digress!)
One of the things I cannot seem to get past is the treatment of Watson in these films. What would make the director or scriptwriter make this decision? Did everyone need a "sidekick" back then? Arthur Conan Doyle created Watson as a formidable partner. He couldn't be the bumbling idiot depicted by Nigel Bruce since he also (fictionally) chronicled all the events.
I still give these films 5 stars because they are definitely enjoyable and, for the Holmes collector, they are a must have.
Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Holmes as Sean Connery is James Bond. Review date: 2007-11-21 Rating: 10 out of 10Basil Rathbone embodies and projects such a distinctive and remarkable persona that it becomes Holmes to all who watch him with disbelief suspended. He crackles with intelligence, and then lays exhausted after the discharge of energy.
What is the more remarkable is that most of the films were made in Hollywood. Few viewers seeing them for the first time today would realize that.
Dr. Watson is played for laughs it is true, but Nigel Bruce manages to make himself endearing nonetheless.
No these films are not faithful renditions of Conan Doyle's stories, but they stand on their own as brilliant expositions of the characters and atmosphere Doyle created. It is as if his creatures had a life of their own.
