Amazon.co.uk Review

In delivering non-18-rated excitement, Alien vs. Predator is an acceptably average science-fiction action thriller with some noteworthy highlights, even if it squanders its opportunity to intelligently combine two popular franchises. Rabid fans can justifiably ask "Is that all there is?" after a decade of development hell and eager anticipation, but we're compensated by reasonably logical connections to the Alien legacy and the still-kicking Predator franchise (which hinted at AVP rivalry at the end of Predator 2); some cleverly claustrophobic sets, tense atmosphere and impressive digital effects; and a climactic AVP smackdown that's not half bad. This disposable junk should've been better, but nobody who's seen Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil should be surprised by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson's lack of imagination. As a brisk, 90-minute exercise in generic thrills, however, Anderson's work is occasionally impressive... right up to his shameless opening for yet another sequel. --Jeff Shannon

Was this film a joke?

The director of this movie should be shot due to his film leading to the death of the Alien and Predator franchises.
Although this film does have its very rare moments, it is very disappointing. It could have been done so much better.
The script was poor which enabled to film to have hardly any action in it at all and when there is some fights, the aliens and preds seem static. Some of the CGI (Computer Graphic Images) are fairly poor especially with the Alien Queen.
The back of the dvd sleeve just rounds the film up: the only good review is from the director's CGI company.

It does excatly what it says on the box

This is a treat for those fans of the alien series , although of inferior quality than the first 2 movies.

A group of scientists is drawn to the Antartic ocean by a powerful signal , what they unveil is a hidden piramid whith some explanations of why the Aliens and Predators ended up in Earth.

Packed with some good action sequences ( albeit not original ) and some semi convincing acting , there are some let downs ; Lance Henriksen ( Bishop in Aliens ) is not at its best and the scene when he uses the inhaler is very poor.

This movie will make you enjoy 2 hours of harmless sci-fi but do not expect anything original or very good.

The extras on the DVD are interesting and add dimension to the story.

3 1/2 stars.

Poor film, but the fight scenes are worth a watch.

The movie itself is pretty bad but the first fight scene between an Alien and the predators is excellent and makes this DVD worth a purchase.

The film as a whole however, is poor. About as bad as Alien Resurrection. I believe a film version of Alien v Predator was a good idea, but the idiots in Hollywood made a huge mistake in setting the movie in modern times and not in the future (as per the video games and graphic novels). The idea that the Alien species were on earth centuries before Ripley encountered them in the original Alien movie is stupid and spoils the whole story-arc of the Alien franchise. Trust Hollywood to destory a decent movie-franchise.

Worth a watch but the film is still a big let-down.

Not as bad as it could have been

I actually quite like this movie but then I'm an Alien nutjob! My hubby is more on the side of the Predators and the kids are in the middle. We watched this in sheer delight the first time and I was perfectly happy. It's not until I'd watched it again that little things began to niggle at me.

For instance, the amount of time it takes for the face huggers to do their job and for the aliens to burst out of the chests was a litte too quick. And I fail to see that a Predator would be so quick to help a human in real life...listen to me talking like this stuff would actually happen!

Anyway, it's a good story and gives a good explanation as to where the Aliens originated from. It's also good to see Lance Henrickson back playing Bishop, (of sorts anyway!). Don't be too put off by the bad reviews, I wasn't and I enjoy this film quite regularly.

Better than expected

Alien vs predator is worth seeing. Theres no point pretending its a classic film - its not. However to write it off completely is unfair as it has some merit. I thought the basic plot idea was a rather well thought out story, and for the first hour the film maintained a decent level of interest and even a little bit of characterisation.

It was certainly nice to Lance Henriksen back playing Charles Bishop Weyland - a nod to Bishop the android in Aliens. Sanaa Lathan is also pretty good as Alexa (effectively the Ripley role) but you would have thought that they could have come up with something slightly more original than creating another Ripley like character. It did become a bit predictable in the second half of the film and there are some noteable plot holes that can't be explained away.

Overall though I found to be an entertaining film. It may be shallow but there are a lot worse films than this out there.
