I would highly reccomend this series. I was a big fan of it when it was on the teleision and enjoyed it just as much watching them all again on DVD. Its full of laughter and comedy mixed with serious life problems, that can bring you to tears.

Kay Mellor is such a talented writer and i really loved the style in which it was written. I cant wait till the fourth series comes out on DVD.

This series made me laugh and cry, it basically follows the lives of a group of 'fat friends' through the weekly slimming club and the pub afterwards. 'Stick Insect' as the club leader is known, is a sarcastic women who aims to encourage but tends to insult the members into losing weight. She is however hiding her own secret she is very thin but is unhealthy - you need to watch it to see. The individual stories are all good, but the one that really touched me was Jamie a young lad who eats for comfort and is bullied as a result, the part where he is attacked in the park made me cry. Kay Mellor is a genius she writes the series to appeal to all of us who have ever struggled with a weight problem, but anyone can watch this and enjoy. Each episode can stand alone, but if you watch them all the characters whilst having their own story to tell interact throughout the series.

Great series!

"Fat friends" is about a group of people from Leeds, men and women of diverse ages, who become friends as they attend the Super Slimmers slimming club. Each episode of the series focuses on a different character in the group, but the episodes are also interrelated. The friends face problems ranging from as funny as fitting into a two sizes too small wedding dress to as serious as low self image, betrayal, loneliness, longing for love, bullying, prejudice or anorexia. They also learn to lean on one another, share problems as well as joys, gain back their self confidence, and they even find love and self fulfillment.

As the episodes run along, I learned to love the characters, and I even identified with some of them. The actors are so believable that I virtually forgot they were actors. They seemed more like real people trying to cope with everyday life.

Even though the series treats some very serious matters, it is far from depressing. It is life affirming, very often comic, and predominantly happy. Despite the fact that in many of the episodes one can hardly restrain from crying while witnessing devastating heartbreak, it is also invigorating to see how the various characters eventually prevail.

In addition, the theme song is nice and catchy. Also look out for the beginning of series two, as Carol, the cynical group instructor, sums up the main events from the first series. It's a brilliant way of getting through the technicality of reminding the viewer of what happened in the previous season.

On the technical side: The set comes in quite a nice box. Picture quality and sound are excellent, and there are English subtitles for the hearing impaired. I would have liked to see some extras, but even without, the set is worth buying.

Personally, I thought the first series was the best, but having seen that you just have to find out what happens in the next two. The characters develop, their relationships develop too, and some very interesting things happen to some of them in series two and three. Some episodes were better than others, to my taste at least, but that's only to be expected. I must add that some of the episodes were so good, that I was on the edge of my seat to see what happens next(I had only seen 2-3 episodes from the first series on TV before).

Finally, the question to be asked about a TV series is whether it bears repeated viewing. I think the answer is yes, especially since most of the characters are very endearing (my personal favourites were Kelly, Lauren, Alan and Val), and since many of the episodes are very emotionally intense.

Highly recommended.
