Synopsis
A documentary covering Jamaica and the effects Globalisation and The World Bank are having on the economy and resources.
How "free-trade" policies really affect a small island - Jamaica
Review date: 2006-07-04 Rating: 10 out of 10
This DVD shows in a clear & interesting way how hard it is for poor countries, in this case a small island, Jamaica, to develop its own economy and provide for its own people. There are lots of vivid examples of the effect on ordinary Jamaican workers & farmers of the plans imposed by the World Bank and the WTO and so-called "free-trade". The film shows that free-trade means the freedom for richer, more powerful nations to dump eg cheap dried milk (for which EU farmers have received huge subsidies) onto Jamaica and virtually destroy the local dairy industry.
There is a lively, reggae soundtrack and spirited interviews with local Jamaicans.
I have shown this film to local friends & groups who have all found it interesting & revealing.
