In this day of reality television, the thought of putting Dinnerladies into the DVD and sitting back to watch each episode is sheer bliss. The characters are all excellent and it does not matter how many times I watch it, it still makes me laugh. Victoria Wood at her very best 10/10.

dazzling dinnerladiesReview date: 2006-10-18 Rating: 10 out of 10One of the funniest comedies ever made, I never get tired of watching this. Set in a factory canteen, it deals with the everyday lives of the canteen staff and various visitors. Victoria Wood, who also wrote the show, plays Bren, who tolerantly and humorously holds the rest of the staff together, aided by Tony (Andrew Gunn) the long-suffering canteen manager. One of the best things about it is that all the characters are funny, and all the performances brilliant. My favourite parts are the barbed exchanges between Jean (Anne Reid)and Dolly (Thelma Barlow), who are wonderful together. The rest of the cast are all terrific too, in particular Julie Walters as Bren's outrageous mother, who lives a strange fantasy life in which she rubs shoulders with an assortment of glamorous celebrities, and is much given to saying things like "John Lennon had this emulsion". The guest stars do their bit as well, one of the funniest episodes is episode 2 of series 1, where Simon Williams plays a Royal Duke eating lunch in the canteen on a Ducal visit. The scene where he bares his soul to Bren about the utter boredom of his life is absolutely hilarious.
Series 2, in my opinion, is a bit patchier than series 1, it occasionaly gets too bogged down in seriousness for my taste. However, even series 2 is still much, much funnier than most other comedies. Brilliant writing and dazzling performances come together in this gem of a series, it's cheap at the price, snap it up while you have the chance.
ExcellentReview date: 2006-05-29 Rating: 10 out of 10Can watch this time & again & it still makes me laugh.
I have forced relatives to watch it (who are not VW fans) and they have said how funny it is as well.
Would like to see a third series of "what happened next" especially bren & tony's move to Scotland. The whole cast were fantastic. Just right to cheer you up!Review date: 2006-03-31 Rating: 8 out of 10Dinner ladies is Victoria Wood at her zany best. The first episodes are working life acutely perceived and absolutely hilarious.
A great pick- me- up if you're feeling down.Laugh and cryReview date: 2006-02-09 Rating: 10 out of 10These DVDs are astoundingly good value at less than £10 for the boxed set of both series. There are no special features or extras, but all sixteen episodes are here and that is enough.Dinnerladies is very funny with its humour being primarily character-driven. In fact, all the action takes place within the confines of the kitchen and canteen where the dinnerladies are employed. The script is so wonderfully crafted that there is no need for changes in location in order to make it work. (Victoria Wood is a genius!) What is more, because the characters are developed so well and so realistically, you care about what happens to them. You are drawn into their world and some episodes can make you cry as well as laugh. That is a truly rare quality in British comedy.
In short, Dinnerladies is one of the best sit-coms ever to be broadcast.
