Why Weren't Cartoons This Good When I Was 10?
Review date: 2004-11-24 Rating: 10 out of 10

Ok, I'll admit it here. I'm nearly 29 years old and I bought this DVD. The Fairly Odd Parents is, yes, a kids' cartoon show. But that doesn't make it any less good.

Timmy Turner, the show's hero, is alternately neglected by his parents and abused by his babysitter. It can't dwell on these aspects, of course, but it does provide a slight dark shading to the 'silliness'. Appointed as his Godparents due to Timmy's unhappiness, Cosmo and Wanda are there to grant his every wish to make his life better. But Timmy is a 10 year old boy and he makes 10 year old boy wishes.

Episodes :
(1) Boys In The Band - A disgruntled Timmy wishes something bad happen to 'teen singing sensation' Chip Skylark, who's local concert has made everyone forget his birthday. Chip ends up as a hostage of Vicky, Timmy's evil babysitter. A very good episode, poking fun at teenyboppers and the stars they lust after

The Hex Games - Timmy challenges Vicky to a skate contest in order to see who's worthy of being 'Queen Of The Skate Park', only to find out that Cosmo and Wanda can only help him show off and not to win. An ok episode, though its ending isn't much good.

(2) Father Time - Timmy unwisely wishes for heat vision, and ends up melting his Dad's prized running trophy, won in 1970. So, he wishes himself into the past to prevent his father ever winning it. Quite good, and more of the show's funny references to the internet.

APartnership - Cosmo and Wanda have a fight over an Anniversary mix-up, and Cosmo runs home to his mother, who never liked 'that Wanda' in the first place and endeavours to make things worse. A more character-based story that usual, including the hilarious and ultra-camp Cupid.

(3) Dream Goat - Timmy is taken to see the town's mascot, a caged goat named Chompy. Timmy wishes for the miserable Chompy to be free, and Vicky is framed for the goat-napping. Average, really

The Same Game - Timmy's buck teeth are made fun of by an adult dentist, so he wishes for everyone to be the same. Everyone ends up as featureless blobs, thus causing problems for Fairy Godparents around the world. Starts very slow, but quickly builds up to a funny climax.

(4) Boy Toy -While smashing up his 'dumb 9 year old toys' with his friends, Timmy wishes himself doll-sized to play with his Crimson Chin action figure one last time. But Cosmo and Wanda are stolen by Vicky's creepy and Timmy-obsessed sister, Tootie. As funny as ever, but more poignant than most.

Inspection Detection - Cosmo and Wanda magic up lots of cool stuff for Timmy to help them pass their upcoming fairy inspection. Timmy's Mom and Dad, however, see the stuff that they haven't bought and conclude that Timmy is an infamous local shoplifter. It manages to shove in a more complex plot than usual, and just about manages to carry it off. It's Helped along by the funny and fearsomely Germanic fairy Jorgen von Strangle.

The thread running though all these episodes are that Timmy is a very selfish kid, but one way or another ends up doing the right , or just a better, thing. The quickfire visual and verbal gags will delight everyone too. The kids will be roundly entertained and your average 29 year old, however, will cast his mind back to a 1980s full of Scrappy Doo and moralising toy tie-in cartoons and wonder why cartoons weren't this good back then.
