Maybe I'm nit-picking, but Little Bear is very definitely Canadian. The accent, to my English ears, is far gentler than the shouty American voices I hear in Dora the Explorer etc. (Maybe it's because I have Canadian relatives and friends). Anyway, LB is a real charmer and my three-year-old son thinks these stories are just great. You can see LB on Nick Jr every night at 6.30.

Lovely. Teaches imagination (and parenting!)

I picked up this American children's DVD quite by chance, and am very glad I did. My little boy loves it, and it's old-worldly children's view of the world peppered with a Mozartesque theme-tune makes quite a change from all the two-dimensional Cbeebies fare children are normally bombarded with in this country. This is altogether a more cultured approach to children's TV. The DVD contains a series of adventures of little bear with his parents and grand-parents and his animal friends. On the way, you come across a meditating frog (wonderful!), a cake-eating pet dragon, and some very kind-hearted but equally sensible parents and grand-parents (whose wisdom and thoughtful interaction is exemplary and can certainly be transferred to modern-day toddlers). The storytelling is wonderful, and really captures how a child's imagination gets sparked off by everyday events.
As I said, it is an American DVD and the accent is noticeable, but personally this never bothered me (I talk to my child enough for him not to get confused). Some people might consider the setting and story lines a little twee, but, hey, this is for children after all (remember Pooh Bear). In all, I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for more high-brow alternative to the telly tubbies or tweenies.
