This has got to be one of the worst examples of acting ever put on screen. The scenes were poorly staged and the acting so stilted as to be amateurish. Don't waste your time watching this read the book instead.

So much wasted potential

With a cast like this and one of the great literary masterpieces for source material, I was expecting more from this version of Les Miserables.
The whole thing was badly edited, giving the impression the filmakers were in a hurry to get through the story while sacrificing the quality. With such great actors it is a pity that the plot was destroyed, to the extent that many scenes and confrontations seemed to be contrived and ridiculous simply because not enough time was spent to develop them. This would and should have been at least a six hour mini-series like the Count of Monte Cristo (Also starring Depardieu) which is magnificent.

Fine adaption of a masterpeice

I thought this film managed to portray the majesty of the book very well. Most of the performances were excellent, particularly Depardieu who gave great depth of feeling to his character. Like another reviewer I'm a bit hard of hearing and the use of French actors speaking English added authenticity but did make intelligibility more difficult. I got round this by linking my TV to an infra-red transmitter and headphone system.

This particular film deserved its "12" certificate.
In my opinion, Depardieu certainly did not perform to his usual standard, although his acting in English may well have constrained his freedom of expression.
I watched this film thinking that it couldn't get any worse,...but it did.
The running time of 172 minutes felt like a lifetime, due possibly ,that apart from Depardieu and Malkovitch, the casting was abyssmal, especially that of "Maurice",and the story line was childishly presented and performed.
In comparison to the other version of Les Miserables, starring Liam Neeson,
this particular version will go down as a dud.
Sorry, Depardieu, but you desrve better!!!

Literary Classic that pulls it off on screen

As usual... no movie can compare to the book in which they are inspired... I've read Les Miserables, a masterpiece which share the top with my all time favorites. The movie... I think it isn't bad at all, considering that for a film it is impossible to show the detail of the book. Even if it is incomplete and many characters are missing, I think it is a very good introduction to the fantastic world that Victor Hugo created for us. I remember the film as touching and highly emotional. I would recommend to everyone, even those who have read the novel. Please understand that this is a movie, and not a Literary work. Watch it for legendary performances by Depardieu and Malkovich.
