Billed as UK TV's answer to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed, the supernatural drama Hex plays more like a coming-of-age story dressed in Gothic trappings. Christina Cole stars as Cassie Hughes, a young girl enrolled at Medenham Hall, a private school that once housed a coven of witches. Cassie, who struggles to fit in with her elitist and over-sexed classmates, discovers that she's even less like them than she thought when she develops telekinetic powers. The onset of these powers attracts the attention of Azazeal (Michael Fassbinder), leader of the Nephilim (the fallen angels of the Bible). What follows is a broad and frequently stylish soap opera that pits Cassie and her roommate Thelma (Jemima Rooper, who steals many scenes), who happens to be a ghost, against Azazeal as he attempts to control Cassie's body and soul--quite literally. His plan is to impregnate her in order to allow the other Nephilim to invade the corporeal world. Cutting dialogue a la Buffy and a hip soundtrack should hook viewers, as will a smattering of nudity and violence and surprisingly solid special effects. -- Paul Gaita

At last a very good goth series
Review date: 2008-06-27 Rating: 10 out of 10

After having to endure buffy et al. for so long, its so refreshing to see something that's this well done. More for adults I suspect, as some subject matter broached in latter episodes is quite dark. Sexy, edgy, addictive, good acting, great locations, great choons, and some excellent humour to boot. What are you waiting for?

Disappointing

After the reviews of this series that i read on Amazon i was very excited about watching it. I was keen to find a replacement for Charmed as i thoroughly enjoyed every series of that. Hex i found had a profoundly more dark feel to the whole series. You were left to feel that evil would inevitably win out and that Cassie, even though she is a goody two shoes character, would not even attempt to fight this situation. I do not intend to watch the second series. I enjoy supernatural shows but at least the sisters in Charmed used the powers they were given to fight evil, even thought they didnt always win. This series didnt have any exciting special effects either.

the only problem is...

the first season of hex is an absloute must-see for fans of good english tv with a supernatural theme. the characters are easily-relatable and realistic, despite their supernatural characteristics (we're talking ghosts, fallen angels, telekinetic powers etc here). the only problem with the season is that it is just too short! you won't want it to end for the simple reason that nothing you watch afterwards will be able to top this amazing programme. with just 6 episodes, you havent got much viewing time but the series is very watchable even the second and third times over. the only advantage to its short length is that you can easily watch it all at once! the making of any great programme is its actors, and on this note, the makers havent put a single foot wrong. every actor suits their character perfectly and as such can play them to the highest possible standards. there really arent any faults with this!

HEX season 1
Review date: 2008-01-03 Rating: 10 out of 10

After watching 2 episodes i found this very good well thought out story i would not say it is much like much like buffy, more like a sugars rush and harry potter meets the devil. Its very rare you get an english made series of this quality.Christina Cole and Jemima Rooper are excellent as best friends/lesbian lovers,I like the way she turns from a girl next door butter wouldn't melt in her mouth type into a a revish sex maniac. so i think it will be interesting to both female and male viewers.I just finished watching season 1 and now i can wait to see season 2 as it has a cliff hanger ending.Well worth the money and for the price of this now you wont find a better tv series for under a tenner

A step in the right direction.

This review contains no spoilers.

To compare this series with Buffy is, I suppose, inevitable, but can be misleading unless the clear differences are expressed. Apart from both series being occult drama set in and around a school, they have little else in common. Unlike Buffy, Hex treats its viewers like adults and assumes that they possess an attention span of more than a few seconds, as opposed to reducing them to a mere profile in a ratings demographic. Despite being a fan of Joss Whedon, I regard the screenplay of Hex as superior. It tries, at least, to take itself more seriously - with varying degrees of success. Its approach to the subject is certainly more mature, it is generally more intelligent, and it is noticeably less focussed on the superficial or merely sensational. The fact that it is a serial as distinct from a series enables the story to develop at a slower and more deliberate pace, and while this may not be to everyone's taste, it does offer the opportunity for more subtlety in plot development. Unfortunately, this is not always used to its maximum advantage, and while it initially appears to adhere more closely to the traditional mythology of the supernatural this aspect tends to become somewhat ideosyncratic during the middle of the series. Nevertheless, the emphasis tends to revolve around the human component and endeavours to favour psychological realism over sheer modernist fantasy. You will find no demons trapped inside computers here. Indeed the whole atmosphere of Hex is more cerebral, and while its quality is patchy - acting, dialogue and plot development tending to inconsistency at times - the direction is good and the cinematography is generally of high standard, aided by attractive settings, elegant interiors and some striking architecture.
For a genre which is noticeably lacking in outstanding works, it is competent and enjoyable, however it lacks real mystery, vitality and suspense, along with that elusive quality of arcane fascination which might have made it great. Perhaps its major weakness is that the plot development is poorly timed, rather too frequently building the tension almost to a crescendo only to suddenly undermine it by unexpected digression for a few scenes. Not unnaturally it is difficult for any type of tension to be sustained when it is left hanging unresolved in this kind of dramatic limbo. This innapropriate timing also reduces the effectiveness of rather too many of the attempts to create atmosphere or introduce aesthetic innovation. However, the fact that it tries is a point in its favour, and indeed there are many things to like about this series - not least of which is the final episode which possesses an internal coherence and a strength sufficient to banish meditation upon previous weaknesses.
I would be inclined to rate it at 70%, but as I am unable to do that, and taking into account the quality of the rest of the field, I have rounded it up to four stars.
