Amazon.co.uk Review

So, what's the story, then, behind Oasis' 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe? Did this brash salvo of rakish Mancunian rock 'n' roll egotism usher in the era of "laddism", the shock waves of which still reverberate around town centres in the form of Saturday night yob culture? Was this Britain's victorious reclaiming of the rock band throne, the crown having been stolen in a coup (arguably for the first time since Elvis Presley) by Yankee grunge imposters? Or were Oasis just second-hand Sex Pistols with a twist of Lennon? Six enthralling DVD hours later--promo videos, footage from Top Of The Pops, Naked City, multitudinous live venues etc and heaps of extended foul-mouthed chit-chat with shrewd label managers, cocky band members, loopy mates and Burt Bacharach--and the viewer may not reach any discernable conclusion. However, one's thinking cap is well and truly stretched in an exhaustively entertaining manner. Rich in anecdote--a nocturnal meeting with a spaced-out member of the Stone Roses on a tractor in Wales, ferrying bass amps across the River Fowey in Cornwall on a speed boat, Tony Carroll's "crap" drumming, Digsy's lasagne--and bulging with barnstorming rock tunes about roll-ups, booze, dole queues, fame and flatulent canines, Definitely Maybe the DVD definitely does the job. And snapper-decking singer Liam Gallagher? A twit sometimes but you have to admire anyone who can make a tambourine look like an offensive weapon. --Kevin Maidment
