Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

Synopsis

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is an unconventional romance told in the abstract, inventive, and comedic storytelling style of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Like his scripts for ADAPTATION and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, this plot works off of a relatively complex idea that is easier explained through language of film than through words. In its most basic description, Joel (Jim Carrey) is undergoing a medical procedure to erase the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). However, while he is unconscious and the procedure is underway, he takes a journey through his mind, re-living moments with Clementine for fear of losing her forever. Using disjointed sound and action, foggy periods indicating Joel's confusion, and flashbacks to childhood where objects appear much bigger than they are to adult eyes, the cinematography communicates Joel's dilemma with visual hilarity. Only occasionally is the film laugh-out-loud funny; instead it is much more deeply and darkly amusing as the absurdity of the situation grows. ETERNAL SUNSHINE is nothing short of brilliant--a credit to director Michel Gondry (who has a topnotch reputation for his aesthetic music videos by artists such as Bjork). Carrey is wonderfully understated in the role of a simpleminded nice guy, and his signature goofiness is used only a handful of times. Winslet too is almost unrecognisable as she lights up the screen with her blue hair and orange sweatshirt, playing a lively free spirit and loose cannon. There are also strong supporting performances by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Mark Ruffalo, along with an excellent score by Jon Brion and a soundtrack of songs by E.L.O. and The Polyphonic Spree. The film's conclusion promises to satisfy viewers; it offers a beautiful metaphor for the end of a love affair that brings perfect closure to this excellent film.

Incredible!
Review date: 2008-08-26 Rating: 10 out of 10

I very rarely write reviews of films or books that I have read but I felt that an exception had to be made for this incredible cinematic experience.
The plot of eternal sunshine is hugely intricate but is clearly meant to be confusing, the reason I expect for many of the one star reviews, but once you get past this you see both how well written and wonderfully acted this film is. Although Jim Carey's performance was undoubtably good, I feel that Kate Winslet's performance has been hugely underrated. Her portrayal of the immensely bizarre Clementine was extraordinary. This film does take some concentration but I highly recommend its viewing.
And please don't be put off by the fact that Jim Carey stars like I almost was - it's like watching a completely different actor.

The most heart warming and beautiful film
Review date: 2008-08-17 Rating: 10 out of 10

I do class this as my top film for so many reasons. The cinematography is great, the story is believable and extraudinary. I love the characters and their unique and quirky outlooks on life. Jim Carey and Kate winslet work so well together and their fractured relationship is perfect, they keep you watching. I can watch this film over and over, not just for thw story but how the film looks and makes me feel. it reminds you that all memories are precious even if theyre painful ones. I dont understand how some people can dislike it. I recommend it to everyone.

worst films ever #1

Amazing, Spectacular, Beautiful..Carrey's Finest Hour!

Eternal Sunshine's complexities originate in a world where it is now possible to erase a portion of your life completely from a person's memory. In this case Joel Barrish (Jim Carrey) is suddenly surprised when his long-time girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet) decides to have him and their fanatical relationship erased from her memory
Judging from the front cover I bet some of you thought it was a comedy due to the face of Jim Carrey. Well, Its no secret that Jim Carrey is trying to let audiences know that he is more than just a goofy actor, and Eternal Sunshine makes that a reality.
The Film is brilliantly intelligent, intensely written and emotionally mature. It has a great cast which includes the likes of - Elijah Wood, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson and David Cross. It's a moving film with terrific performances all round - this is easily one of the best films of the year.
The only time Eternal Sunshine seems to stutter is with its sudden ending, which isn't bad because it is such a huge plot twist, but because it is so sudden the ending seems to be a little too easy and unsatisfying.
Everything said, this movie is certainly worth the view, but don't be surprised if you are a little upset, this film isn't for everyone.

Dissapointing and wierd.
Review date: 2008-06-18 Rating: 2 out of 10

I really didn't enjoy this film at all. It's strange Jim Carey doing a serious film- although he can do good ones like '23'. I didn''t like any of the characters, and didn't like the storyline- which was boring and confusing. I didn't like seeing Kate Winslet with blue hair either! It was a really wierd film- which i suppose was its purpose- but i didn't like it at all. But most people i know who've seen it really like it, and looking from the reviews it shows i'm in the minority. ...mayb its cos people dont tend to rate movies they don't like ?!?! :)
