Amazon.co.uk Review
Focused lightning bolts, stigmata, possession, and ancient curses become secondary in Season 3 of The X-Files as more episodes are devoted to pursuing the increasingly complex story threads. "The Blessing Way" is an explosive start, introducing the Syndicate's well-manicured man (John Neville), while Scully's sister Melissa is shot and Mulder experiences Twin Peaks-like prophetic visions. We learn of medical records of millions, including Scully, who have been experimented upon ("Paper Clip"): the fast-paced train-bound two-parter "Nisei" and "731" suggests the experiments are about alien hybridisation. Krycek turns out to be hosting an alien in the next double-act, "Piper Maru" and "Apocrypha", in which Skinner is shot by Melissa's killer. Two great one-offs outside the arc are "Clyde Bruckman's "Final Repose", a bittersweet tale of foreseeing death (featuring an Emmy-winning performance from Peter Boyle) and Jose Chung's "From Outer Space", a spoof of alien conspiracy theories through an author's investigations into abductees. --Paul Tonks
Not the best
Review date: 2007-08-02 Rating: 6 out of 10
I'm making my way through the DVDs as I missed most of the episodes on TV.
Season 3 has some very good episodes but the season get dragged down by the tongue in cheek / comedy episodes that just weren't funny, but rather boring. Too many of them stop the season being as enjoyable as 1 and 2.
The underlying conspiracy moves along in a few episodes but I think that all the conspiracy episodes from all seasons would only span about 1 normal length season. The rest is more like The Outer Limits with recurring central characters to tie it together. The overall lack of focus and cohesion across the seasons is the X-Files weakness. This was also the failing of another Chris Carter series - Millenium.
The X-files is at its best when it gets dark and scary, but the writing isn't consistent enough. Won't stop me getting the next box set though.

A great seasonReview date: 2007-07-13 Rating: 10 out of 10This third season of the X-Files is probably one of the best the show has produced and includes some of my favourite episodes. The season begins with Mulder missing, assumed dead, and the two part episode that follows resolves last season's cliff-hanger well. The season quickly returns to the monster-of-the-week type show that it was always best at; if there is a problem with this season it is that it gets back to normal somewhat too quickly. Season highlights have to be: Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose a sweet story about a man who can predict the future and a serial killer; Hell Money about a dangerous game played during a Chinese holiday; and Jose Chung's `From Outer Space' a light-hearted episode that pokes fun at the whole UFO culture as well as the show itself. The show is universally well made, well written and well acted and these early seasons are thoroughly entertaining.Favourite episodeReview date: 2007-03-18 Rating: 8 out of 10I'm not particularly a fan of shows of this genre, but x files is a classic and so an exception to that! This is not my favourite season neccesarily- but contains my favourite episode (D.P.O. aka episode 3) which remains untouched as the best in my opinion even after all these years! So I would recommend this season just on the strength of that, and a few other absolute gems contained. Thing with the x files is that there isn't a definitive 'best season' as all tend to have some really strong episodes and then some not so much- all down to opinion I hasten to add, as all our well scripted and enthralling but depends on what interests you to an extent and what really makes you think. Some say start at season 1 and work your way through, and although there is a sense of continuity re: Mulder and Scully and their personal lives; diving in at any point is an absolute treat and the start of what will probably be wanting to see as many as you can! I enjoy trying to figure stuff out as it goes along, and for me this series was the best for that.A workmanlike seasonReview date: 2006-11-01 Rating: 10 out of 10By now, the pattern of almost all X-Files seasons is established: mythology episodes at the beginning and end of each year, with a couple of double-episode mytharcs mid-season. In between, the monster-of-the-week eps, and some lighter fare, are spread around.
The show's third year is consistently strong, and high-quality. It seems odd now to look back, having watched all 9 seasons- at the time this series seemed mature even though it was barely a third of the way through its run. The season finale, Talitha Cumi, even when viewed with the season 4 opener Herrenvolk, isn't top flight, but the rest of the season makes up for it.
Favourites:
Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, Nisei/731, Piper Maru/Apocrypha, D.P.O., Pusher
Episodes I remember not liking, but enjoyed this time round:
Oubliette, Avatar
Weak points:
Teso Dos Bichos - famously disliked by cast and crew. Not as bad as I remember, but not good.
Good as far as things go.Review date: 2006-04-06 Rating: 8 out of 10I have nothing bad to say about this season. The quality of the first two continues. The conspiracy deepens and their are some first rate stand alone episodes. There just isn't anything new or groundbreaking here to be honest. The first down right funny episodes apear here as well. "War of the Coprohaghes" and "John Chung's From Outerspace" which both take a comedic stance on the content and characters of the series.
