Her pregnancy remained at the foreground, while a more prominent Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) joined in a hunt for the abducted Mulder that drew upon the black oil, cloning, and bounty-hunting aspects of the convoluted alien conspiracy story. A distinct lack of guest stars or writers indicated maturity beyond the need for ratings stunts: dedicated fans were pleased to see sinister Krycek, the reliable Lone Gunmen, and the return of the show's very first abductee. The real strengths of the season came from new characters, including alternative female role model Special Agent Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish), and some terrific standalone episodes. Investigations covered a man going backward in time, deaths aboard an oil rig, a contagion in the Boston subway tunnels, and creatures resembling bats and slugs. Agent Leyla Harrison (named after an X-Files fan who died of cancer) got to ask all the petty questions regular viewers want to know themselves. With season 9 promised to be the last, this year was a remarkable achievement so late in a show's life.--Paul Tonks

The eighth season of The X-Files will always be remembered as the year of brave decisions. David Duchovny's increasing dissatisfaction with the role meant he'd only appear in a few episodes. The solution? Enter Agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick) who basically stole the show within his first two minutes of screen time (and watch out for several Terminator 2 in-jokes too!). Scully (Gillian Anderson) switched roles to being the believer alongside Doggett's skeptic in a year that was more reliant on the background story arc than ever before.

A big improvement on the previous season, and possibly my favourite season of all of them.
The introduction of Doggett re-invigourates the show. Mulder's reappearance threatens to spoil it as Mulder is even more paranoid than ever and at times is just irritating.
This season has more of what I would consider the shows best ever episodes than any other.

A lot better than expected

Mulder is missed, but the plots make up for it (after a fairly dismal few shows to end series 7). Doggett is more compelling than you might expect, and it doesn't give the impression of a series on the slide.

If you ask any X-Files fan when they thought the show 'jumped the shark', they'd probably say season 8. Not me though. The opening two-part episodes Within and Without are perhaps two of the best mythology arc related episodes in the series, picking up events from season 7 cliffhanger Requiem and introducing new regular character John Doggett (played by Robert Patrick).
The first half of the season deals with Doggett's introduction to the X-Files, becoming the skeptic, while Scully is now the believer. It's also interesting to note that this season uses the mythology arc more than any other in the series, which is both a strength (for long-term fans) and a weakness (for casual viewers).
The season really picks up in the second half, when Mulder returns to the mix, investigating a number of cases with new characters Doggett and Monica Reyes (played by Annabeth Gish), as well as a continuing relationship with Scully. All events culminate into the fantastic season finale Essence and Existance, which could have made a great series finale if not for season 9, which turns out much weaker as a whole.

I think this season is grossly underrated. It renews the main characters, gives us plenty of new ones to explore, and resurrects the ailing mythology with a vengeance (there's what's basically a four-parter mid-season). Doggett and Reyes work extremely well as new additions, and the mythology episodes are actually exciting again. Petulance drove many fans to reject the show without Mulder, but I think they made a mistake.
Stand-alones have a fresh feel with Doggett involved, though Mulder's eventual return reminds us how profound his absence is. I would rate this season above some earlier ones, if I had to compare them.

Within/Without - introduces Doggett well, but spins out quite a lot of nothing over two episodes.

This series is great in my opinion. Mulder has gone and has left scully to shine and in my opinion i think this is different but good. Also Robert Patrick has came onto the show as a new agent and he's cool. Theres also agent Reyes who appears more in series 9 and is cool but we don't see her a lot in series 8. Still series 8 is a lovely series and i can watch in time and time again without getting bored. This series is under-rated and the other reviews are un-fair in my opinion. I think any fan should get this as they will not be disappointed no matter what anyone else says.
