Overlong, slow moving and dated.
Despite these criticisms, the film sensitively portrays an Israeli officer's dilemas as he struggles with hia conscience, when his government calls on him and his team to avenge the deaths of the Israeli athletes massacred by terrorists at the Munich olympics.
Based on a true story and raises the problem of how governments respond to acts of terrorism against their citizens.
Worth a watch.

Great TV MovieReview date: 2006-01-22 Rating: 10 out of 10DVD- (Cinema Club). Video and Sound transfer is excellent for this made for cable TV movie from 1986.There are no extras at all on the disc just the film.Picture ratio (4:3).Duration:170 mins
FILM- Sword of Gideon is based on the book,"Vengeance" by George Jonas (screenplay by Chris Bryant) about the aftermath of the attack on the Israeli Olympic team at the Munich games in 1972.
There have been a number of films on this subject, most recently Steven Speilberg's MUNICH which is based on the same source material as this DVD.
The story and direction are both excellent. Great use of international locations and fine performances from an international cast, the lead roles being taken by Steven Bauer (Cuba),Robert Joy(Canada),Michael York(England),Laurent Malet (France). The story centres around the Israeli Goverment's attempts to assasinate those responsible for the deaths of the Israeli atheletes, sending out a specialist team of assasins lead by Israeli Commmando Avner played by Bauer who gives a fine performance of a man torn by duty and conscience.
The film plays like a cracking good international thriller and at 170 minutes long you won't be dissapointed. In the wake of the release of Steven Speilberg's MUNICH it is well worth checking out the earlier version of the same story.
