One of the best UK comedies ever
Review date: 2007-10-01 Rating: 10 out of 10
This DVD is the first series of the classic BBC comedy 'One Foot In The Grave', introducing one of the most memorable sitcom characters of all time, Victor Meldrew (Richard Wilson) and his wife Margaret (Annette Crosbie).
It all starts when security guard Victor has been forced to retire as his job has been replaced by an electronic box. This then sets Victor on his journey through retirement, trying to cope with various health worries, troublesome youths, a swarm of bees, irritating friends and neighbours and a funny smell by the sideboard.
Overall this is one of the best and funniest comedy shows ever to come out of Britain and is an absolutely essential purchase that anyone young or old should enjoy. It is impossible not to love Victor's constant complaining and it will have you in stitches thoughout each and every episode. Although this series was made in 1989 it still seems very modern and has aged very well indeed and is one that can be watched and re-watched again and again, making this extremely great value for money. I'd give this DVD 10 out of 5 if I could!

This is still funny, I do believe itReview date: 2007-07-17 Rating: 10 out of 10I loved this as a teenager when it was first shown on BBC1 and I still love it now, I don't know how popular this is with younger people of a certain age, but if I am in a young minority who likes this, then so be it because this makes me laugh which for me is the most important thing in a sitcom.
This does make me laugh but it is not the only reason why I have always loved this sitcom, there is something about it that I have always found darker but also more real, warmer and emotional (but not in an over the top sickly way) than a lot of sitcoms. I love sarcastic characters in sitcoms and Richard Wilson as Victor Meldrew is definitely up there with all the sarcastic sitcom greats, the situations that he unintentionally gets himself into are as funny now as on their original showing and will continue to be for as long as this is available for future generations to see.
Another reason why I have alway liked this sitcom is because of Victor's wife Margaret (Annette Crosbie) who I have always found to be more believable than a lot of wives in sitcoms, I just found her more likeable and less nagging than the usual sterotypical bossy and nagging old wife, even when they shout at each other, I always know that they will be fine. I also must give a special mention to Mrs Warboys (Doreen Mantle), her mannerisms just seem to always remind me of someone my nan nan use to know and I am sure that a lot of people will have known somebody similar.
Although I find this one of the funniest ever British sitcoms, it is more than that, it is an attack on the disgraceful stereotyping and patronising treatment of old people in general and the way that society seems to think that none of their opinions matter and Victor Meldrew is the perfect voice to say what people think, underneath all that shouting and whinging is a very caring old man that rightfully just wants to be treated with respect.
Compared to the absolute classic sitcoms of the 1970's this is modern but there is no question in my mind that this will be just as timeless. ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BRITISH SITCOMS EVER.
The Start of a Fine SeriesReview date: 2006-11-07 Rating: 8 out of 10Series One of "One Foot in the Grave" is, perhaps, more subdued than future series and is almost gentle by comparison. The six episodes here focus almost entirely on Victor, his wife Margaret, and Mrs Warbuoys. Less outrageous than later series, the episodes are still marvellously written and very funny. The BEST TV Show Of All TimeReview date: 2005-12-20 Rating: 10 out of 10One Foot In The Grave is quite simply the greatest show of all time. It beats all the other 'great' sitcoms. Unlike 'Only Fools and Horses', everyone should buy this DVD as it just is not repeated apart from graveyard slots! Go out and buy it- it will be the BEST investment you have ever and will ever make.
Better Than Five StarsReview date: 2005-10-25 Rating: 10 out of 10Some years ago a good friend from across the pond turned me on to this show. This hilarious series is an absolutely perfect balance of humor with an ever present reminder of the dark side of reality. At the time, various episodes were being sporadically aired on various PBS stations and I gleaned onto VHS every episode I could. Sadly, the Meldrews have long since faded from the airways over here. The smattering of episodes I was able to record are becoming no less faded and grainy from repeated play and custody battles with friends and realatives reluctant to surrender them. And now, finally, my hope and patience that someone over here might realize the genius of this series and market it in this neck of the woods has waned. Without regard for this region coding nonsense I've ordered all of the so far available series from Amazon UK. I'll get whatever equipment I have to to be able to watch these DVDs. Presumably, anyone reading this review will be able to view these discs without messing around with new equipment so you really have no excuse for failing to get your own copies of this fanatstic comedy. You'll laugh yourself silly.
