Politically sloppy line
Review date: 2008-02-02 Rating: 8 out of 10
A small British-Polish thriller that exploits the common fear that lives and thrives in Europe. It is based on two associated lines of menace. On one side the problem of the numerous orphans in Eastern European countries and there illegal immigration into Europe. These orphans are little by little coming out but not through the normal official gate and highway but through some illegal procedure that transforms them into some kind of slaves. The second line is that of prostitution. In this case only girls are concerned, hence only female prostitution is considered. These two lines associate the fear of illegal immigrants, of national identity and its erosion in front of European integration and the moral fear or disgust at prostitution in general and at turning young teenage girls into prostitutes in particular. Then the involvement of some Turkish nationals is neither clear nor necessary but it corresponds to the desire to add an anti-Moslem touch and to fight against a possible integration of Turkey into Europe, a perspective many in Europe are against, though without any convincing arguments. In other words this film is more governed by European interest than anything else, and I mean political interests in this case. That is a real handicap because then the thrill is a lot less powerful and the story is a lot less convincing. The final escape of the two concerned children (what about all the others involved in the traffic in the film?) to the USA is even more surprising. What do Americans have to do with European prostitution?

ONE OF SEAGAL'S BETTER EFFORTSReview date: 2007-07-25 Rating: 8 out of 10Out of Reach (2004) was another Seagal straight-to-video film. Originally this film was set to be directed by Ringo Lam. But during the production, Mr. Lam was frustrated by the bad script and tried to re-write the film. He was let go and another Hong Kong film maker Po Chieh Leung was brought on to helm the production. The film is pretty uneven and questionable at times but the director has managed to create a watchable film.
Steven Seagal stars as a retired federal agent who corresponds with a Eastern European girl. One day she stops writing and a bored Seagal decides to fly to Bulgaria to find out why his little pen pal has stopped writing. Whilst in country, he finds out that there's more than meets the eye and nothing is as it seems. The main villain is a very creepy individual who prefers the company of adolescent girls instead of women and likes to fence with his spineless lackeys for pleasure. Can Steven find the girl, polish off the bad guys and bring some rogue agents to justice or will the be Out of Reach!!??!
Not a bad film but it's marred by a lot of post production tinkering and looping (they couldn't even bring back Seagal to do his own dubbing). The last twenty minutes are the best in the film with a nice finale between Seagal and the sleazy scumbag.
Recommended for action fans.Segal .Out of reachReview date: 2007-06-26 Rating: 4 out of 10I think this is the worst film I have seen steven Segal make it is awful. Its slow and ponders along. The fight sceans are terrible and staged with a muppet for an actor. But it is good for a laugh, but why is the little girl writting to him in the first place? Will we ever know .KenWhat????? Seagal what are you doing???Review date: 2006-03-31 Rating: 6 out of 10I love Seagal films no matter how bad so I would give this a 5* but I thought I would be fair to others that do not share the Seagal Gene. It is about Seagal and a little girl in eastern Europe who write to each other (for reasons never explained) But when Steve receives a letter saying that she will be unable to write to him anymore he decides to go and find her.
The action in this film is better than in many of his recent efforts but can be typified by one scene where he (that should read his double) walks down some stairs and is grabbed around the neck, no fall, no punches just grabs him and Steve decides to use his double? The there is a sword fight at the films climax but it is slow and really staged.
My favourite moments in this film are when Seagal is dubbed by an impersonator who must have thought he was Michael Jackson as it sounded nothing like Seagal. I can only imagine that Steve must have been "busy" when they asked him to come in and touch up some of the sound.
In all rather rubbish but I love this kind of trash.
Not a Hollywood flick, but not bad either!Review date: 2005-04-09 Rating: 8 out of 10Apart from the dubious Seagal voice dubbing during the story telling, the villain was great, the story line plausible, scripted well and produced to a better standard than many of Seagal's recent Hollywood flops - Anglo/Polish production proving to be good value for money... hope future Seagal movies will keep to this standard (and he looks healthier too!)
