Mcvicar was a grammar schooled lad who went astray and ended up doing some of the most vicious bank jobs in the time of the "supercrooks" the krays, richardsons, the great train robbers et-ol john mcvicar wrote the script for this exellent film himself and his book (by himself) also spawned the idea of the shawshank redemption for stephen king. this film is a great look at to how mcvicar was locked up in durham goal in the sixties, he wouldn't accept been locked away so planned his escape with the help of wally (adam faith) along with some quality acting (berkoff) and (faith) roger daltrey really captures the part of the no-nonsense john mcvicar right from the start with the now legendry line "alright who's got my trainers" then the "i aint going anywhere till i get me fackin trainers" truly gripping in all and even had caracters loosly based on ian brady (cody) "sex case sex case hang him hang him hang him" . after mcvicar made his escape he went back to his armed robbery as a means to an end but the law was onto him and in the ens one of his closest pals turned "grass" and gave him in where he went back to prison and wrote his book which is also exellent i would advise you to buy the book and the dvd as it is a facinating read

Daltrey could have been a serious actor was it not for THE WHO
Review date: 2007-12-24 Rating: 10 out of 10

Recounting the life of habitual criminal John MCVicar who was in prison for a 23 year stretch for armed robbery with intent on causing death by use of firearms.
This magnificent film made by the same producers of the other WHO films,Quadrophenia and The Kids Are Allright sees Roger Daltrey in superb form as McVicar before he was sent to prison, life behind bars to his escape and eventual and powerfully acted capture after months on the run.

The cast is equally impressive with Adam Faith adding that extra touch.

A film very similar to Phil Collins "Buster" but far more gritty in language and acting.

Daltrey is so good he could easily have made a good living as an actor.

The film like others has that seventies early eighties feel to it but the acting is really superb and makes this one you will watch again and again.

If his acting was superb his singing of the title score to the film is brilliant, Daltrey is a jack of all trades.

this deserves plaudits

mcvicar is a film based on the life of once criminal john mcvicar, produced by the who films company which was a side project of the band the who,the film stars the whos singer roger daltrey as mcvicar and the soundtrack is largely done by the band themselves, money all round then, well not film wise anyway, the film has been confined to the shadows to be overstepped by various other crime films of the day, some of which are better and some alot worse.
Nevertheless, the film is a gritty look at prison life, not as raw as say alan clarkes 'scum' but vicious enough,at the centre is inmate mcvicar who is sentenced to 23 years and wont accept a single day,he is sent to a tough prison in durham and cant take the place so along with his friend wally, played by adam faith, plots his escape.
Goodness, now i cant say any more or i will give what happens next, but needless to say this is a classy little unknown gem, daltrey plays his part with ease and the film is realistic enough without ever stepping over the mark, more violent films have been made, more cold and sinister prison films have seen their way into the world, but mcvicar is a fine example of a classy, well paced, jagged show.

Top crime 'Brit Flick'
Review date: 2005-07-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

Anyone who loves British films will love this.
A fantastic film that is at times violent, sentimental and hilariously funny with some great diologue that you will find yourself quoting again and again, (or is it just me?)
The cast is full of characters from the Geordie screws to the London Gangsters who are banged up in Durham Prison.
Roger Daltrey is great in the title role and the soundtrack is full of some seriously good rock songs that really relate to the story. This film for some reason is not as well known as Scum and Quadrophenia but is up there with both as a classic movie of this era.

A Brilliant Film!

Roger Daltrey plays the part of McVicar with scarily realism - he really does portray the image of a no nonsense hardman who will do virtually anything to get what he wants. This is one of my favourite films and lives upto what you would expect of a Who Films production and comes with the obligatory excellent soundtrack to complete this quality and sometimes nailbiting film.
