More fun that it has a right to be
Review date: 2007-12-08 Rating: 6 out of 10

Starsky and Hutch is more fun than it has any right to be, even if it does depart from the series in many ways. Stiller has Paul Michael Glaser's mannerisms down to a tee (he even has Glaser's bizarre run, like a hyperactive duck doing a windmill impersonation, down to perfection) but otherwise is another of his trademark anal neurotics while Owen Wilson takes Hutch even further away as a laid back dude not above a spot of robbery to supplement his salary. But it is funny, good natured and doesn't outstay its welcome too much. The only real bum note is giving the final glory to Snoop's terrible Huggy Bear, a charmless, boring and lazy performance constantly outshone by his own bodyguards.

Real stars cameo at the end
Review date: 2007-06-25 Rating: 8 out of 10

The big-screen adaptation with Ben Stiller (as Starsky) and Owen Wilson as (Hutch) spoofs everything the TV show took so seriously, and to good effect. In this outing, we find out how the duo became partners, and why. It seems both are misfits, with the opposing personality traits of the originals exaggerated to an almost-impossible level, giving them a very high-energy odd-couple buddy vibe as they chase aspiring drug kingpin Reese Feldman (Vaughn). Of course, Huggy Bear is there to assist (in the person of Snoop Dogg, who is spot-on). Stiller and Wilson have this act down, and they never linger on a gag too long. One of the better 70s spoofs is Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul have a quick cameo at the end.

A rubbish film...

If you are a fan of the TV series, then avoid this film. It just mocks a great TV series, buy the original series and forget this film. Also the acting sucks in this film.

Hilarious - if not a little dismissive of the series
Review date: 2007-05-15 Rating: 8 out of 10

I can see from the previous reviews that there are obviously a lot of fans of the 1970s series with hurt feelings regarding this movie. Honestly, I haven't ever watched the 70s series (Although my Mum raves about how great it was!), so I can't really compare the two, but Starsky & Hutch: The Movie deserves a lot more credit than is given for just how funny it is.

I always enjoy Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughan/ Will Ferrel films- and Starksy & Hutch is utterly hilarious: The pair's relationship and their obvious differences, the scrapes they get themselves into (and out of) and the subtleties of casting and script. Snoop Dog deserves credit for his cameo as Huggy Bear, and Vince Vaughan clearly enjoyed himself playing a villain with a perm.

The script and the way it is played out by the actors is the film's strong point- there are so many witty one-liners in this film, I've lost count. Ben Stiller is spot on as square, uptight and law-abiding Strasky, and Owen Wilson is such a lazy loveable rogue as Hutch- Watch it if only for fun's sake.
