Undiscovered gem
Review date: 2008-05-04 Rating: 8 out of 10
Deep Cover is something of an undiscovered gem amongst 90s thrillers (I.e. Most people have never heard of it, but it's actually rather good)
I seem to recall it got reasonably good reviews on it's release, but suspect it didn't do that well at the box office, due to the lack of an A List cast (though Jeff Goldblum was more of a star then, than he is now)
This is a cool, slick thriller, but it doesn't glamourise drugs, or violence. In fact some scenes are very intense/graphic, which is perhaps why this film doesn't get more showings on TV.
In some ways, it's the film Miami Vice should have been (moody, intense and cool)
Admittedly, it has aged slightly (some of the clothes and hair styles look a bit dated) but overall it still works well.
The picture quality is OK/pretty good, considering the age of the film (there's slight grain in just a few scenes and also occasionally the black levels aren't quite right. Otherwise it's fine, in fact some of the close ups look incredibly sharp & detailed)
The soundtrack is only a stereo mix, but it's a pretty good stereo mix, with lots of left/right detail and the Rap style music still works surprisingly well.
In summary, a good/very good film, with goodish picture & sound. Well worth buying if under £8.

get the popcorn sit and enjoyA real gemReview date: 2007-01-01 Rating: 8 out of 10If you have not seen Deep cover then you are missing a treat. This is one of the best underated thrillers/dramas of the 90's..stunning performances from both Lawrence fishburne and Jeff Godblum. I used to own this on video and re-bought it on dvd. Lawrence Fishburne plays a cop sent to infiltrate a drug cartel undercover..he starts at the bottom with the street pushers and works his way to the top where he meets the top boss, along the way he meets jeff goldblum who plays a bent lawyer in league with the cartel..Fishburne gets deeper into the lifestyle and doesnt know if he's a cop pretending to be a drug dealer or vice-versa.
Great soundtrack and features the deep cover single by dr dre/snoop. A real classic and very underated..go buyDisappointed...Review date: 2006-11-29 Rating: 2 out of 10The real annoyance is that I bought this mainly to get hold of the moody ambient piece that plays during the film's love scene. I find it's called 'John and Betty's Theme' and lasts only two and a half minutes... so cut down it's really just a sampler.
As for the rap side, there are far superior albums... a lot of filler tracks on here I can't remember from the (excellent) film... perhaps some guy was listening to them on a walkman as he passed the main character in a crowded street?Brilliant movie is all I need say.....Review date: 2004-05-11 Rating: 10 out of 10I watched the film DEEP COVER and wanted to recommend this film to anyone who is into a film that has brilliant acting by main players and supporting cast alike. Some excellent direction by Bill Duke, who if you don't know him, he is in Commando and Predator. The chap who loves to shave. An excellent performance by Laurence Fishburne as undercover cop John Hall, sent in to infiltrate a drugs cartel. Jeff Goldblum also puts in a great performance as David Jason Attorney at Law. A film that has action, suspense, brilliant story and a twist. A scene in particular is quite graphic but only adds to the film's realism, and of life on the street. In one word "BRILLIANT". Well worth the spend.
