The monster is loose
Review date: 2006-01-17 Rating: 10 out of 10
This is the original film version of the Mary Shelly book "Frankenstein", and in spite of it somewhat simplistic dramaturgy, it should be a must for all fans of monster movies or classical cinematography. The effects and make up are, for their time, excellent. There are some plot changes, shifting the moral of the story somewhat, compared to the original story. Where Shelly's moral was very contemporary, even today, namely that man should not temper with the natural order of things, emphasizing the dangers of ability without humility, the movie's moral is more along the lines of "if you're going to play God, make sure you get a qualified assistant"...

STILL FRIGHTENING.... and amusing heheheReview date: 2006-01-17 Rating: 10 out of 10I saw these films in the early 80s on television. And now after many runs on the vcr, finally own èm on dvd.... FRANKENSTEIN 1931 is still a fright to me. Because of Boris Karloff and a wonderful supporting cast headed by Dwight Frye, the gothic atmosphere and the absence of music - you can SMELL death and fear.... Compared to later films you might say that the production values are small, but the stylistic rich black and white photography and ingredients mentioned above make this an all-time-classic which STILL WORKS....THE BRIDE OF FEANKENSTEIN 1935 is pure James Whale. It is a glittering celebration of drama, suspense, trick work and black humour.... After reading about and seeing GODS AND MONSTERS(about Mr Whale with Ian McKellen in a great performance) - this is indeed an auteur film....
These two films should always be seen together after a small interval....
Mother of all horrorsReview date: 2005-05-27 Rating: 10 out of 10This set of Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein are the best features that Universal ever made from the monster era; The cast and the latters darkly humour are flawless, the direction is of the highest quality; not a dull moment in any of these two films.Classics Galore!Review date: 2004-07-28 Rating: 8 out of 10Er am aware that some people have complained that Region 1 versions is far superior to Region 2. You get a lot more for your money for a start, also much cheaper too. Still, having said that, these classics are still worth having. These two classics have certainly stood the test of time though. Digitally remastered, they will enhance any Home Cinema set up, with decent picture and adequate sound! Blimey, these movies are 70 years old for heavens sake!!! Universal set off a trend in movie making in those days which has never been surpassed taking into account modern so called monster movies like Van Helsing are all effects but no body and soul which these classics still possess after all these years. Of the two Frankenstein movies, The Bride of Frankenstein is the better. Quite simply, it has everything; dark humour; wonderful set pieces; a fabulous movie score by Franz Waxman, and of course the lovely Elsa Lanchester as the Bride! Er, did I say lovely? Actually Elsa is quite superb in this movie. Also, one must not forget Boris Karloff's sympathetic performance as the Monster desperately trying to make some sense of his life, and to find genuine friends, only to be rejected by the Bride in the astonishing final sequence, which will never be surpassed. If you can purchase the Region 1, go for it though, better value.Rip-off Britain strikes again...Review date: 2004-06-09 Rating: 2 out of 10If you buy all 3 Universal monsters collections (Dracula, Wolf Man & Frankenstein) on R2, you'll have spent £45 plus postage, and own 6 seminal horror movies. - so why the one star?Because if you buy the "Monsters legacy collection" on R1, you'll have the same 6 movies, 8 more universal horror movies from the series', the 1931 Spanish version of Dracula and 3 hand painted min-busts from sideshow collectables, all in a kick ass presentation box, and you'll have only spent £35 including shipping from the US!!!
