All out zaniness but also all over the place
Review date: 2008-06-20 Rating: 8 out of 10

Mad as a strange cheese, this movie is scriptwriter Woody Allen's first screenplay, so that goes a long way to explain the complete unevenness and disorganistion of this movie. It took him 15 years of practice after this to actually produce anything resembling a cohesive, non-fragmentary narrative and a further five to stop telling the same jokes, so really, if you want to watch this film because you're a Sellers, O'Toole or Romy Schneider fan (she is delectable in this) then you will simply have to bare all the worst excesses of this man's craft. Of course he also makes it hilarious most of the time, and this does compensate for the very bumpy ride. He has a strong part himself and he made sure he would have some sort of film career with a full on slapstick Woody Allen performance. O'Toole just gets stuck into the chaos of it all and proves how adept at comedy he was, and Sellers puts on another silly wig and another silly voice and, effortlessly conjuring up a character from his Goon days, out zanes everyone, even Woody Allen. It is madness and you really do wonder what they put in the director's tea, or if it was infact just Allen's cat with a beret on, (and glasses of course) in charge of it all. Either way, it certainly has its moments and leaves an impression - mostly of the 1960s being a very fun and whacky place to be.

classic farce
Review date: 2006-10-03 Rating: 10 out of 10

This Sellers film has everything: great music, one of Sellers' great characters (a sex-mad, unloved psychiatrist), a very funny romantic lead in O'Toole, and Woody Allen in great form. It also has genuinely funny ladies and a nostalgic 1960s Paris. There are great set-pieces. The reputation of the film is undermined by the go-cart race at the end, but otherwise it is very strong. The symbolism shows that there is a message in the film, which is that the sexual liberation trend of the 60s must lead to chaos for everyone, whether the romantic lead, the small man with specks, or the unrequited nutcase, with plenty of business for the psychiatrist. So like all Sellers' great characters he was able to take his part seriously even in this pure farce.

I enjoyed it

If you like 60's films you'll love this. While the editing is awful the atmosphere is good and Woody Allens script has many great lines. Sellars is terrific and Romy Schneider captivating. This film is probably best enjoyed by people who like a trip down memory lane and if thats you then buy it.

A busy little film
Review date: 2005-10-04 Rating: 8 out of 10

Loud, garish and full of energy. Very much of its time and worth viewing for that alone.

Peter O'Toole plays an unlikely ladies man, given that he bears a strong resemblance to a ventriloquist's dummy (anyone who remembers 'Lord Charles' will get the picture) and does plenty of his trademark yelling. Romy Schneider is beautiful as his commitment-seeking regular girl. Sellers goes nicely over the top as sex-obsessed therapist, Doctor Fassbender, and Capucine is an elegant treat for the eyes, portraying a classy nymphomaniac.

Set in France - presumably to emphasise the stereo-type of France being the land of lovers - O'Toole finds himself pursued relentlessly by a bevy of beauties at every turn, while trying to be faithful to his girl.

Dreadful editing and continuity, but what this film lacks in polish it makes up for in vigour, capturing the breathless energy which was emerging in the sixties. Great music, too.

Ridiculous

In spite of the excellent cast this movie is not at all a masterpiece. It might have some funny moments but this film really suffers from bad editing and from it's complete lack of authenticity. The same jokes are repeated over and over again. Unless you are a collecter and have to have all of Peter Sellers' movies: keep your hands off this!
