Lost at Sea
Review date: 2007-09-28 Rating: 2 out of 10

I missed the first series when it was on tv, just as well or i would never have bothered watching the much better second series. Bill Patterson is great but where on earth did they get his two sidekicks from? did they get BAFTA awards for being boring?! Very very tedious drawn out episodes which should have lasted half the time. Dissapointing, but do not let it put you off watching the second series which is much more edgy and he has two new sidekicks.

About twice as long as it needed to be
Review date: 2007-07-30 Rating: 4 out of 10

Each of the stories in this series are split over two long episodes and I think the series suffers as a result.

The stories aren't bad at all, if you like the supernatural/paranormal sort of thing (and I do) but I think there is too often some plodding and ponderous plot to get through on the way and that leaves the whole series feeling a bit two-dimensional and `Afternoon TV' (a quick note though - there's a fair amount of gruesome stuff.)

There's no problem with the acting at all and Bill Paterson and his side-kicks do well despite the slowish and somewhat humourless script they've been given. By cutting and creating a single episode out of two each time the creators might have made better use of the quite good material they had.

Good series.

I just finished watching this series - though I'm a skeptic by nature and training, I liked it a lot, with the exception of the first episode, which I thought to be the weakest. In my opinion, the point of the drama is not so much to prove that the paranormal exists, but that the world and life is not what we would like them to be. In three episodes, the main characters (splendidly played by Bill Patterson, Archie Panjabi and Peter McDonald) prove that a particular paranormal phenomenon exists, but in such a way that their expensively obtained proof will not help with the situation that prompted their research. Thinking again, did they really prove that the paranormal exists?

More than 5 stars for this one!

Sea of Souls is a fantastic drama series - possibly better than any other drama series I've seen. Personally I prefer the first series, but only because of Peter Macdonald. ^^ Incredible Scottish scenery, realistic, and tremendously well-crafted storylines for both series. Excellent actors and well-written. I only wish they'd made a third series, and I have no idea why there isn't one, since there are brilliant reviews and lots of people watched it. But anyway, I'm not the BBC. Wish I was though, and I'd make this happen! Advice for anyone looking to buy: the two series are quite different from each other, and also, whatever side of the paranormal you take, you WILL love this! I only wish I hadn't got addicted to it. :(

Re-incarnation
Review date: 2005-09-02 Rating: 8 out of 10

Sea of Souls has been consistently thought provoking, absorbing and very credible. It explores potentially very difficult subjects would could easily appear crass and unbelievable, but clever research, story lines and excellent choice of actors avoids this. If only there was more quality television of this sort.
