French Original was better
Review date: 2007-05-27 Rating: 6 out of 10

The remake of 'Mon Pere Ce Heros' catered for a Hollywood audience and is probably the better known of the two outside the French Speaking world. I prefer the original; blame it on the Mauritian bias but objectively it's true. The original is more flowing and I recommend watching it before the remake.
This was recently issued in France on DVD under the title "Mon Père Ce Héros". When I bought it, I imagined it to be a film where Gérard Depardieu takes his daughter on holiday to Mauritius ( a film which I had seen and enjoyed several years ago ). What was my surprise when they ended up in the Bahamas, and the daughter wasn't the same actress as I had seen originally. On checking, I find that this is a remake of the original film. They should have issued it on DVD under the title "My Father the Heroe" to avoid confusion with the original. Just typical ! That said, the film is very enjoyable and is a perfect copy of the original film which also stars Gérard Depardieu, hence the confusion. The problem is in France they have this terrible habit of translating titles of foreign films into French ( which serves absolutely no purpose at all ) instead of respecting the original.

One of the funniest points where Depardieu is singing and playing "Thank Heavens for Little Girls" unaware of the fact that most of the guests listening think he is a paedophile. This is not in the original film and is a plus. Apart from that, the sets and plot are a carbon copy of the film set in Mauritius.

Not a patch on the original.

A likeable enough remake of a brilliant French original, but on the whole it just doesn't live up to the original French movie, "Mon Pere Ce Heros".

Depardieu is (of course!) still very funny, and has the most expressive face in movies.

The humour is there but just doesn't work so well in French and there are some cringeworthy moments.

Heigl also isn't a good enough substitute for Marie Gillain.

On the whole, likeable teen movie stuff, but the original film is better by far.

Fantastic Comedy - totally hilarious and awesome.

The saying 'What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive', was never more true than it was in this movie. Nicole (Katherine Heigl) and her father Andre (Gerald Depardieu) gave a hilarious performance in this fantastic comedy. Andre and Nicole's mother are divorced and Andre has not seen Nicole in five years. Nicole is now 14 years old, insecure and resentful of the fact that her father has been absent for the last five years. She blames it on the fact that he has a girlfriend, Isabel in Paris and as such no longer cares about her. While on vacation with Andre in the Caribbean, Nicole meets a local boy and to impress him she tells the most outrageous lie. As the web of lies spin out of control as the story unfolds, poor Andre was treated like a 'pariah' by everyone on the Island without him knowing why. Until Nicole tells him about the lies she told and asks him to play along. This movie is simply hilarious; you will laugh from the beginning to the end. It s also a very emotional and moving comedy, as the movie explores the relationship between an estranged father and his daughter, tests their love for each other and in the experiencing they come to a better understanding and appreciation of each other. This is a beautiful, hilarious and moving comedy. I strongly recommend this DVD.

Hilariously Entertaining

This film is actually a remake - the original was French, but also incidentally starred Gerard Depardieu.

The story begins when Andre, a French pianist, takes his fourteen year old daughter Nicole on a holiday to a tropical paradise. Andre and his wife divorced some years before, and Andre hasn't seen his daughter in a few years - their only contact was by phonecalls and letters.

Andre's life is thrown into complete disarray from the moment he and his daughter are together again. Nicole is not the little girl he remembered; in fact, she's a young woman who is beautiful, tempestuous and yearning for maturity beyond her years.

Nicole meets up with a handsome seventeen year old from the Island by the name of Sam. From the moment they meet, Nicole is smitten, and realising there's no chance with him as an immature fourteen year old, she begins to spin elaborate webs of lies about her age. First she tells him she's eighteen, then later sixteen. And so it begins.

This is a hilarious movie, with some incredibly funny parts (look out for Andre's "thank heaven for little girls" performance on talent night - it's a scream).

At this price, you can't NOT have this DVD. It's a great comedy, and despite the thought of a daughter calling her father her lover is somewhat taboo (even if it is only pretend), the film is still incredibly innocent.

Love this movie. Love it.

What a film!

This is a fantastic film. It's very funny, without having to be rude and using bad language. I love this film!!
