Bruce "The God" Campbell strikes again
Review date: 2005-01-07 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film is fantastic. Everyone is calling it a cult classic, forget that!! Its a classic that everybody should own. It's funny, sad, touching and moving. Just the basic premise (Elvis v a mummy) should be enough for you to buy this film.

when i first heard about this film i thought what a dumb idea!
then when i had watched it my sides hurt for almost 2 hrs you will think that i am exagerating but im not the twisted satrical comedy contained in the movie hasent seen its match in almost 2 decades and bruce cambell has made a triumphant return to the quality of the evil dead series. on a down note the film has not
been released in the uk as of this time and yet most people would sell there grandmother to get a copy and are forced into sharing with friends

A modern cult classic!
Review date: 2004-09-16 Rating: 10 out of 10

The thing that's great about this movie is that it's subtle, it's not got the initial punch of a stunt filled opening scene like a James Bond flick, nor has it got the out and out gore of an Evil Dead movie, if you're expecting either then clear your mind before sitting down to watch!

What you have here is an engrossing and serious (yes, serious!) movie about what could have happened to Elvis if he'd lived (and switched lives with an Elvis impersonator and wound up in an old folks home with a dodgy hip and a cancer in one of the last places you'd want it!) The film cleverly pulls you in, slow, but sure, to the plight of the aged rocker forgotten by friends, family and time.

Director Don Coscarelli has delivered a movie that's multi-layered; poignant and respectful, reflective and humorous, sublime and ridiculous, this film should rightfully wind up as a cult classic. As a brit I spotted this movie on some of the movie news sites and as soon as it was available got a copy sent over, I was not disappointed - the film looks and sounds good, ok some of the effects do occasionally look cheap but that's in comparison of big studios and their big budgets, but on the whole the effects work well, we need more indy films like this in my opinion.

As far as the acting goes the leads (Ossie and Bruce) give the characters depth and soul whilst the supporting cast just add to the feel, I particularly liked the (literally) scene stealing Grandma and the funeral home guys chatting as they load the bodies of the dead into the Hearse.

Even my mother is itching to watch this film! Bring on the sequel.

more than meets the eye

forget bruce cambells previous outings or the films title and premise which promises an hour and a half of zany hilarity or your going to be disapointed.just approach with a"blank canvas" and let the director and actors surprise you.yes it is funny(quietly)and mildly scary but above all this unusual little movie is moving.cambell and davis are peerless as two lonely neglected old men, whether they are who they claim to be is neither here nor there,it's what they've been reduced to that matters.the uncaring, matter of fact way that the steadily increasing pensioner body count is dealt with sets the tone for what really counts here and the ending is the sort of simple, pointed conclusion so few directors seem to manage any more.watch and I challenge you not to feel uncomfortable about your own too fast approaching twilight years.
By the way if its outright hilarity your after then cambells in character commentary is one of a very few you could listen to more than once.
