Applause! Applause!!

Although I enjoyed it immensely the first time, this hysterical showbiz farce, gets funnier with each viewing. It is also a good idea to watch it at least once with the subtitles on, since the dialogue is extremely fast paced. The the ensemble cast is delightful. Michael Caine plays the two-timing director with his usual perfection, and Carol Burnett plays the temperamental leading lady with her usual panache. Both John Ritter and Christopher Reeve are very funny, the former as the neurotic leading man and the latter as a dim-witted method actor who has to have his off-stage beat for removing a box of groceries explained to him. Marylu Henner and Nicolette Sheridan are convincing in their supporting roles, as is Denholm Elliott, a has-been actor who hides bottles of whisky in convenient cubby-holes backstage. I especially enjoyed Mark Linn Baker who plays the beleaguered stage manager.

Peter Bogdonovich's direction as well as his actors' split-second timing makes this farce a real treat. Doors open and close, plates of sardines get passed back and forth, props get mislaid, yet everything goes exactly right--until it goes awfully wrong.

And therein lies the fun!

This movie should be banned....it is unbridled abuse of one's funny bone!

I have seen the play and the movie. Although it was written as a play, I believe this movie is the better version.

Why?

The cast is truly First Class! Their comic pedigree is unquestioned before you even press play on your DVD Player, but when you see them in action as an ensemble, you (and as an actor myself) truly sit back and marvel at their collective genius. They say that an actor is only as good as his part, but these actors bring so much more to their parts than words and mime.

For me, there is a lot of subtle interplay in the play between characters which is lost in the 'largeness' of the stage versions. The closeness of the camerawork in this movie version allows you to see facial expressions better, pauses are more focused and the sense of pace is much more intense!

The comic timing is pin-perfect and twice as sharp.

I much prefer Michael Caine's Directorial interludes in this movie to the actual play's Director's stage hopping on-and-off...it allows you to get your breath back for further comic attacks...of which there are many.

WARNING:
Do not watch this movie if you're recovering from an operation on your viscera or jawbone, or if you're incontinent!

Watch this movie and celebrate a work of genius and the stunning ensemble work, which, sadly, we can never recapture.

I defy anyone, by the end of Act 3, NOT to be in tears or traction!!!

Alfred Hitchcock's Rope but without the extras
Review date: 2006-03-09 Rating: 10 out of 10

The film itself is brilliant. It is based on a stage play. On stage you just get continuous action without cutaways and they have attempted to film huge long complex scenes without cuts, much like Alfred Hitchcock did with Rope. You may not notice this straight away but it adds to the effect of a flowing hilarious stage farce.

The original play is set in Britain, the film is set in America but that fact adds another layer to it. The play within the film is set in Britain still and it makes for some extra jokes to the ones in the play. I've seen the play and I think the film is much snappier as it crams the action in without unnecessary pausing. The cast is great, every one. Sadly Denholm Elliot, Christopher Reeve and John Ritter have since died. Their performances are fantastic.

Now to the extras on the DVD. There aren't any. Wait, there are subtitles. It is not even widescreen! And I don't like the box cover. I prefer the American one, that was the old video cover when I first rented this years ago. There is nothing in the box but a disc. It is a shame but what can you do? At least the film itself is standalone excellent.

Best comedy ever!

this is my favourite movie ever. It makes me laugh till I cry. It is hilarious. It's one of those things you can watch over and over again, no matter what mood you are in and who you're watching it with. It's worth it!!! I love it to bits and pieces! If you need something to cheer you up, this is it!

Sardines....Sardines !!!!

Very few stage success` make a smooth transition to the big screen. But "Noises Off" excels. With a cast of mouth watering talent, Michael Caine, Carol Burnett and Christopher Reeve to name but a few. Indeed if you know the stage version, the film will not dissappoint and will have you laughing from beginning to end. Ok here`s the basic plot. A group of actors put on a play, and as opening night draws near they are still not ready what with contact lenses, flowers and sardines all adding to the confussion. Tensions rise and trousers drop and things go from bad to worse, but there is a happy ending.....or is there ? One of my favourite films, give it go I`m sure you`ll love too.
