This film was a pleasant surprise. Moving effortlessly from scene to scene, Sissako's small-town study manages both to capture the humility and relationships of a Mauritanian community, and also cynically pokes at the Western parallels in these seemingly immutable groups. A treat. 85%

I love foreign films, and don't mind slowness, but this was a step too far. Boring, incomprehensible, engendering more questions than answers which even the director's comments did nothing to elucidate.
