Great band, great set, great buy
Review date: 2008-07-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

Ignore the reviews that put this set down. Gregg's voice is fine and the gutars of Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks are everything I would wish then to be and some more besides. There seems little point in harking back to Dickey Betts days or offerring wholly negative reviews. Sure the blues is at the fore at the expense of the country side - as exemplified by Dickey Betts - but it seems to me that this in fact returns the band to its roots. If you don't believe me go back to listen to Idlewind South.

Derek Trucks is the slide guitar god - anyone who thinks different should get their ears examined. He is complimented by Warren and together they bring more bite than the band had previously had for some years. Moreover there is a genuine excitement in playing.

You could argue over the relative merits of albums but ultimately this serves no useful purpose. This is a great gig by a great band full stop. Appreciate it for what it is. Music should not be ranked or demeaned by the best.....in the world type arguments.

"Desdemona" kicks butt - there is no reason for this band to simply trade on past glories - but that doesn't prevent them from playing what they damn well like.

Chill out .....have a beer - slam on this fantastic cd. let others worry about lists.

I commend this cd to the house.

Well I Never ! - Call Me Cynical But......
Review date: 2007-06-06 Rating: 2 out of 10

I panned this album about three years ago under the Title of "Bring Back The Man In The Hat", referring to Dickie Betts, who had just left the band, and whom this live album seems to miss rather badly.

It's tired, most of the songs have been done before by better editions of the ABB; it seeks to blot out the Dickie Betts contribution to the ABB from their genensis until he left, there's far too much of Warren Hayes' guitar on it, and not enough Derek trucks, and ....who really needs another ABB live album?

Strangely enough, this review has been removed from Amazon. I wonder why !!!!

live show at the beacon
Review date: 2004-07-08 Rating: 8 out of 10

like mr sinclair from scotland, myself and two friends went to new york in march this year to see the second night of this year's beacon run.
the show was first class, including a surprise cover of the band's "the night they drove old dixie down!"
the most heard comment from the crowd as they left the theatre was " i can't wait for the release of one way out after a show like that".
the cd more than lived up to my expectations, the combination of derek trucks and warren haynes is superb now and can only get better in future in my opinion.

So Disappointing - Bring Back The Man In The Hat ?

Sorry, folks. If you loved the ABB sound of intermingling bluesy guitars, and enjoyed the pleasure of picking out one lead from the other, all the while hearing the faithful soulful Hammond breaks of Gregg, his fantastically smokey bluesy voice, and the interplay of Butch and Jaimoe, then this one is probably not for you. Warren Hayes' slide guitar crunches over every song without an iota of subtlety or soul, Derek Trucks is so obviously still feeling his way into the band, and sounds completely overawed, judging by the timidity of his solo's, and errrrrrrrr.... sorry, but Gregg's voice is shot to bits. Old songs whose standard was set by "Fillmore East" are dragged out and mercilessly clubbed to death by the least subtle slide guitar playing I have heard since Lee Brilleaux on "Back In The Night" on Dr. Felgood's marvellous live album, "Stupidity". The others on this set are all - coincidentally - not written by the guy whom Gregg sacked, and who contributed about 50% of the material for all albums post 1989 reunion, one Mr Betts. They also all seem to come from the ABB's last album, which was post Dickey as well. The liner notes state that this album is "for all those fans who come to see us night after night.....- you know who you are."
If you are not one of these, save yourself some cash. Both "An Evening With..." and "Second Set" are infinitely superior offerings.
Now can we please go Back To Where It All Begins, and find some soul, subtlety, and spirit. - From one very disappointed ABB fan.

Better than the Fillmore...Really!

'Hitting the note' was one of the best ever Allmans albums and this i would say is their best ever live album. The band are quite simply stunning and in Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes they have two of the finest guitarists i've ever heard. The whole band are on top form, the solos blaze and Greg Allman is singing better than ever. Just when you think they can't top the last track they do. Absolutely magnificent and no country music for once!
