Just one thing..
Review date: 2008-08-15 Rating: 8 out of 10

I agree with the reviews below; a very good transfer to DVD of a classic film. Much of it was made on location in Crete and it is fascinating to see glimpses of how life used to be not that long ago (before the holday invasion). The cinematography by Christopher Challis captures the landscape quite spectacularly.

However, there's one thing here. The DVD box shows a colour (or colourised) image. The film is (of course) in black and white. That's no problem for most of us, but I know some younger viewers in particular would be disappointed to find that it was shot in monochrome. The DVD company are being a bit mischievous here surely. What's wrong with a black and white image on the box?

Otherwise, a classic, a tribute to the Cretans in particular, and with a nice touch of humour missing in so many of today's films.

A cracking good war movie - and true!
Review date: 2008-05-02 Rating: 10 out of 10

First up I must question a previous reviewer's comments regarding DB's war service. Was he an SAS officer during WW2?? He served in intelligence and in his later volumes of autobiography recounted some harrowing events that occurred during his time in the armed forces, particularly towards the end of the war as the concentration camps were discovered, but he didn't serve in the SAS Regiment. He was an extremely fine actor and Ill Met by Moonlight is a favourite of most Bogarde fans, not only for his performance but also for the factual basis of the story and stunning setting of the film. Absolutely recommended viewing for any Bogarde fan or just if you enjoy a cracking good war movie.

True Story
Review date: 2007-10-04 Rating: 10 out of 10

This movie is about Paddy Leigh-Fermor's (the Dirk Bogarde character) kidnapping of Kreipe, the senior German General on Crete and the subsequent smuggling of him to British controlled Egypt.
Paddy's fluency in Greek, various Greek dialects, German and other languages made him a must for the SOE.
All the usual 1950's Brit (and Irish) actors are in the film, along with a number of Cretans.
This is the story that someone once said "If they make a picture about it, nobody will believe it's true!"
Buy and enjoy

Great Film
Review date: 2007-01-23 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is one of my favourite films. Great acting, Dirk Dorgarde was in real life an SAS Officer and that comes through this fil. Super diection, as usual by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. I even like the German General played by the wonderful Marius Goring. A good addition to any DVD collection!

my all time favourite

what a pleasent surprise it was to see this gem of a movie released onto dvd. Great picture quality and an excellent soundtrack by Mikis Theodorakis. The storyline is known, but highly recommended for those with an interest in Crete or wartime Greece. Dirk Bogard plays the roll superbly. What a fine actor he was ! Grab a copy while its still available. You won't regret it.
