When I eventually got a copy of the game, it was the most dissapointed I'd ever been with a video game. The graphics and sound are neat enough, but the gameplay is terrible. Players take up the wrong positions, make the wrong runs, controls are unweildly, movement is wrong, the AI is terrible. To summarise Bad points: Buy this game to show the video game world there is a market for a rugby league game, but don't expect much enjoyment from playing it.

We've got an RL game, but how about a good one

I'd been waiting with SO much anticipation for this. When it was released, and there weren't many copies around, I spent hours checking shops hoping there'd be a copy left and missed on a shelf somewhere.
A good example of the gameplay failing is how a player runs with the ball. Firstly, carrying the ball doesn't slow a player down at all. So any break by a fast player from anywhere on the field will result in a score. Secondly, the players momentum won't hinder his passing - a player can be sprinting forwards and left, but can still throw a 20 yard bullet pass to his right!
If you compare this to the way players move, side step, tackle etc in something like Madden, you can see how awful this is.
Good points:
It's Rugby League!
Graphics & sound are OK
The gameplay
The Super League players aren't accurate
The AI is poor
The player positioning
The gameplay again
The main problem is the AI especially in defense. Unless you spend the game constantly standing 20 yards back from the gain line the computer teams can just cruise through the gaps left by your other players.
This is a shame, as you can be enjoying the game and then, through no fault of your own, the opposition slices through your line and scores.
Your team-mates unfortunately will not even carry out the most basic of defensive moves without your direct control.
The slow-mo kicking is good but the occasional close-ups of players is both pointless and disruptive. It would also be nice to be allowed some time for advantage following a knock-on instead of immediately reverting to a scrum.
Overall then, rugby league fans, or rugby fans in general, will probably derive some enjoyment from this game but as a fan of both codes of the game I was disappointed.
Heres hoping World Championship Rugby(out April 8th) will prove to be the Pro Evolution of Rugby games.
Rugby League however seem to have mastered the majority, game play can be slow at times, but there is an option to speed this up. I would say because the rules are simpler than Union it has meant that they have been able to incorporate everything.
An excellent first attempt at RL, the EA boys need to learn from this for their next Union release. Worth a purchase, even if you challenge your mates with a couple of beers to your side (over 18's only though!!), if not substitute for a Shandy Bass!
