Amazon.co.uk Review
Audiences overlooked Wild Bill at the cinema, but it's one of the better Westerns of the 1990s, featuring yet another terrific performance by Jeff Bridges, America's most underrated movie actor. As James Butler Hickock, he captures the sense of a man at the end of his career, one of the first media superstars who discovers that his legend is more burden than blessing. As he heads toward his final hand of poker in Deadwood, South Dakota, he flashes back to his younger days and the events that built his reputation, even as he copes with encroaching blindness caused by syphilis. Walter Hill blends action and elegy, utilising a screenplay based both on Pete Dexter's novel Deadwood and Thomas Babe's play Fathers and Sons. Wild Bill features strong supporting performances by John Hurt (as a Hickock sidekick) and Ellen Barkin (as the tough, lusty Calamity Jane)--but the centrepiece is the sad, manly performance by Bridges, who more than measures up to the part. --Marshall Fine

Wild Bill [1995] wild bill! what is so wild about this dvd nothing really. Jeff Bridges plays wild bill rather well. the beginning of the dvd starts off really well. but, as the films goes on it starts to become very boring and tiresome to watch. not a good dvd. in parts of the film it sounds more like a comedy and having Annie Oakley played by Ellan Barkin with her corny american accent makes the film not one to watch. sad really, if the acting ang more attempt to make this film really something it would be a very and accurate account of the life of wild bill. this film is made just to pass the time. it is a film that gives no interest.

But, as entertainment value this is rubbish, save your money and time and watch something else.IronicReview date: 2007-12-13 Rating: 6 out of 10Some reviewers seem to subscribe to the Alanis Morrisette definition of irony. Leaving aside the woeful mis-casting of Ellen Barkin as Calamity Jane...
Leaving aside the creation of a redundant character in Charlie Prince, out of place and time, you can hear the clunking mentality of 'oh, we got John Hurt, lets have a voice-over narrative'.....
Leaving aside a performance of nonsensical over-acting from Geoff Bridges as he gurns and mugs through the scenes, rendering his subject more as a witless imbecile than a dark and troubled soul.....
Leaving all that aside you are left with a fourth rate formula Western, by people who took too many tokes on the old Chinese pipe, a one-eyed three legged turkey of a film, richly deserving of its box office failure. Short and Sweet-just remember it's a Film?Review date: 2007-05-27 Rating: 8 out of 10Nice to see the Wild West portrayed as it surely was and as I've seen it in numerous books - dismal and dirty with water sodden tracks for Main streets and filthy looking bars where you were as likely to die from botulism as being shot. Jeff Bridges plays Hickok very close to the real character and Ellen Barkin is a sassie but pretty Calamity Jane, not like the real-life CJ who looked like a fire-tender had reversed into her mug and was very "macho". The storyline sticks relatively close to what allegedly happened in true-life but forget all that and enjoy what is an immensly well made, warts and all, almost docu-style film delivered by Walter Hill. The 2 leads are backed up by Diane Lane and John Hurt who also narrates part through the film.
