Sony RDR-GX3 DVD Recorder
Full of promise - only to disappoint!

I bought this dvd recorder about 16 months ago. I had waited until a recorder was possible before I bought any DVD player. I chose Sony because of it's reputation for reliability. I was the only one of my friends who had a recorder and I was chuffed to bits with it at first.
The manual is tricky to read, and so I don't think I got it's full potential, my daughter worked out the basics for me.However a couple of weeks ago, it started to go wrong, and I thought maybe it was me, but more and more weird error messages came up, or it wouldn't record, neither on timer or manual. Now it won't even play back reliably. I bought it from Amazon, so sending back is a) impractical and b) it is out of it's first year warranty.
I am now stuck with something of an expensive white elephant.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - I have seen other reports on the 'net outlining very similar problems to those I have had, and no-one seems to have had any answers as to what to do!

Im happy with it, I record my family vhs tape. the problem some of the video cam we have b4 was NTS the use video system , when we connect it the sound good the pic not staple go up & down not clear the question is : how can I solve that??Eaay, quick and reliableReview date: 2005-05-30 Rating: 10 out of 10An easy to set up DVD recorder - with Sky/PS2/Nintendo/Dolby 5:1 bits and pieces, we had no problem - so you should be on your way to recording in only a short while. The on-screen menu is nicely laid out, easy to navigate and understand. It accepts nearly all DVD media (which is a restriction on other models) and the quality of recording is great. The lowest setting/highest compression which I'd heard was pretty poor picture quality - it's not, it's perfectly watchable!
Get yourself a few DVD-RW (rewritable) discs, they'll come in handy for your regular programs, and you can just delete them from the disc as you go along. This is easy to do, as well as moving the program order, changing titles and details, you just go into the menu and it's very straightforward.
Nice looking machine, very easy to use and good quality; we've used this for about 6 months now without any hassle whatsoever. Goodbye to the VCR!!
The only slight down point for me is it's a bit loud (because of the fan) when the machine is on - but it's no louder than a PS2 or computer, and my other half can't hear it, so it'll probably only be noticeable to those with excellent hearing :)DVD recorderReview date: 2005-03-03 Rating: 10 out of 10Mine's given a year of trouble-free recording. Especially good at preserving old VHS and camcorder tapes, its video noise reduction controls have a remarkable resorative effect.
HSP mode (90 min) looks the same as HQ (60 min).
SP (120min) is noticably blocky, especially in 16/9.
Audio is Dolby Digital (256kbps).
Connections include RGB scart in/out and s-video in,
though you'll have to buy the GX7 if you want an iLink.
I'm most pleased with my purchase.
