Electric Eye! In the sky!
Review date: 2005-11-19 Rating: 10 out of 10

If any Priest fan does not have this DVD, they NEED to buy it! As you probably know it has all their music videos, TOTP and 'Old Grey Whistle Test' live performances and the fantastic full concert recorded in 1986 for the "Priest...Live!" double CD which shows just how good Rob Halford's voice was after he stopped drinking.

Excellent stuff!

Part Brilliant, Part Agonising

I've been a fan of Judas Priest for more years than I wish to remember and without doubt they have punted out some of the most defining heavy metal music ever. But it has to be said that Judas Priest perhaps are better listened to than watched. I can't quite believe how completely camp Rob Halford is, especially in the truely excruciatingly bad promo videos. All of them. On one Top of the Pops section he wandered around the "stage" more like Marc Almond than a supposedly macho rock band. He makes Freddy Mercury look positively heroic and in comparisson Julian Clary is more like Arnie as Terminator. Having said all of that JP really do rock and they have a sound not like anyone else. The Turbo Live concert is good and mullets notwithstanding they do put on a very slick polished 80's performance.

This is a DVD for fans and if you do watch it, then don't put it on in front of the kids, because it won't do your image any good whatsoever.

Classic Priest arrives on DVD
Review date: 2003-12-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

Finally, Priest have decided to acknowledge their pre-"Ripper" Owens years with a fine collection of vintage metal classics. Before wayward vocalist Rob Halfords return, they tried hard to erase his importance to their history by only promoting (quite rightly) their current albums. What is surprising is that it is Halford who has his name on the essay in the accompanying booklet.

Enough of the politics, let`s talk music. First up are the promo videos, most of which were previously available on the "Fuel for life" video. If you haven`t seen them, the early videos for "Breaking the law", "Living after midnight" and "Hot rockin`" being amongst the most memorable of the genre, maybe being the first conceptual videos by a heavy metal group. Also memorable, for the wrong reasons, is the "Heading out to the highway" promo. It makes you feel very uncomfortable watching Rob Halford mince about in a very tight pair of jeans. The others are typical rock videos, albeit with a superior soundtrack to most.

The Dallas 1986 segmant was previously available as "Priest...live!" on video cassette. It has been long out of print so it is very welcome to have it in this handy collection. The sound is fantastic, being in 5:1 Dolby Digital Surround. The stage-set is also spectacular, consisting of giant robots and hydraulic ramps. The clothes and haircuts are a different story, however. Mullets, long coats and spandex being the typical rig out for the whole band. The music is great with a load of Priest classics like "Freewheel burning", "Electric eye" etc. although "Turbo" (the then current LP) features too much. It is strange that this concert has been included when the 1983 Memphis concert has no featured songs. Holding back for a sequel perhaps?

The extras are nothing short of being the icing on the cake. Many unseen for many years BBC performances from "The Old Grey Whistle Test" and "Top of the pops" showcase Priest in the very early days. If not for these archives, their would be very little documentation of this time. Having had a few teasing snippets on the "Metalworks 73-93" video, it is great to sit back and enjoy "Dreamer deceiver" and "Rocka rolla", although it is bizzare to see Halford with long hair. There are still some clips which they have not included which exist, like an excellent performance from Channel 4`s "The Tube" in 1984. Again perhaps this is being held in reserve for a follow-up. Oh, and "Freewheel Burning" is not included in the extras section.

This is an excellent value DVD, consisting as it does of two separate videos and a load of extras. There are very few mentions of the "Ripper" era, only in the discography section, which is the total opposite of the "Live in London" DVD. This makes a perfect companion for that concert. It belongs in any serious metal collection.
