Amazon.co.uk Review
CSI: Miami follows the same super-successful formula as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Fortunately, this instantly popular spin-off established its own unique identity from the start. Like Gil Grissom's motley crew, the Dade County criminalists of CSI: Miami solve murders using forensic science. Unlike the Vegas crew, however, they're cops with the power to arrest, their coroner talks to dead people, and almost everybody speaks Spanish. Sometimes their crime scene is a swamp, sometimes a resort hotel. Either way, the skies are always sunny, the gators always biting. Real-life Florida resident David Caruso--playing Lt Horatio Caine, the head honcho--is joined by Khandi Alexander (NewsRadio) as coroner Alexx Woods, Emily Procter (The West Wing) as ballistics expert Calleigh Duquesne, Adam Rodriguez (Roswell) as underwater recovery expert Eric Delko, and featured player Rory Cochrane (Dazed and Confused) as Tim "Speed" Speedle--though Cochrane wouldn't become a full-fledged cast member until the 12th episode ("Entrance Wound"). Kim Delaney (Caruso's former NYPD Blue cast mate) features in the first few episodes, but left after the tenth, reportedly due to a lack of chemistry with Caruso. Just as CSI has made the most of its location with stories about showgirls and casino owners, so has CSI: Miami exploited its surroundings for all they're worth. Like its parent show, CSI: Miami quickly became a US ratings powerhouse and was followed by CSI: New York in 2004. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

An excellent spin-off of C.S.I.Review date: 2007-07-24 Rating: 10 out of 10I've been an avid viewer of the original C.S.I. (Vegas) for over 6 years now and have seen every episode, so I'd consider myself a pretty big fan of the series, however I've never tried out either of the series' spin-offs (Miami & New York) so I've now decided to give the Miami series a go and purchased this first DVD boxset. Having the series coming out in half-series box sets is great for a tester, although now it means I'll have to fork out more cash for the second half as I absolutely loved these first twelve episodes.
I'd already been introduced to Horatio Caine and his team of CSIs a few years back in an episode near the end of series 2 of C.S.I. Vegas, which was also Miami's pilot episode, so I was vaguely familiar with some of the characters, but when beginning to watch this series from it's proper start, I'm now getting to grips with all the characters in a bit more depth and they are now starting to feel like regular characters that you care about their backgrounds and what happens to them from episode to episode.
The filming, script, characters and the cases are very similar to the Vegas series (obviously) and is very stylishly done. Having new locations on the sandy beaches and in luxurious beach houses makes a nice change from the deserts and gritty casinos and hotels from the strip of Las Vegas. Although at times it's hard not to miss Grissom and the gang. There's also more gore in this series and the autopsies can sometimes be a bit much, but then again C.S.I. has never been the kind of show you can watch whist eating your dinner.
Well, so far so good then with C.S.I: Miami. I'm glad I expanded my horizons and chose to branch out from the confines of C.S.I. Vegas as there are some top quality episodes here with a great cast and some very memorable and enjoyable cases. I look forward watching the rest of the series and one day may even try out C.S.I: NY.CSI Miami - if you like ANY CSI series, you'll like thisReview date: 2007-05-18 Rating: 8 out of 10Having become addicted to CSI Las Vegas, I decided to try series 1 of Miami and New York.
Miami is clearly in the same mould as Las Vegas and in many ways is 'more of the same' - but what makes it so good is that the lead characters are not carbon copies of Grissom's team. Horatio Caine is far more likely to become emotionally involved than is Grissom, who usually stays well behind the emotional barrier. The forensic teams are also very different (but I do wish Alex the pathologist in Miami wouldn't coo over her corpses as if they were babies). The stories are all very powerful and some definitely do hit home with very strong emotional themes (the image of an 18 month old toddler wandering happily along a street even though she is covered in blood just HAS to get you).
If there is one weakness with Miami it's the annoyance of how often stray hairs are found at crimescenes - and many rival a good-sized piece of string for being obvious. (In one episode, a blonde hair that could be used as a shoelace is extracted from a bedbox in a camp dormitory!) It is also worth commenting that Miami goes deeper and more explicitly into the gore than does Vegas - holding up and squeezing out the contents of a stomach is perhaps a tad too graphic!
But those niggles aside, Miami is still an excellent series and if you enjoy either the New York or Vegas series, you'll love this one as well.
All we need now is for Jerry Bruckheimer to start having a say here in the UK so that our own 'Silent Witness' can drop all those stupid love triangles and Boyd's character in 'Waking the Dead' can be sacked or sectioned for mental instability and the crime of destroying what was once a passable challenger to CSI.WAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Review date: 2006-12-31 Rating: 10 out of 10Was excited to watch CSI when I got the dvd but once I pressed play I was hooked, The cast are amazing especially Horatio he is awesome. The program is so detailed and the suspense I get when I watch it is great. This is a must buy DVD.these reviewers are madReview date: 2006-08-08 Rating: 10 out of 10The first type of CSI experience was with Miami, and if wasn't so damn good i wouldn't have watched Las Vegas or New York, i never got the idea that Caine was egotistic, however i will admit that the characters aren't as indepth, however i always found that enthralling, you don't know as much about them but that is good because it makes it all the more intriguing when you do get these little insights into there lives.
