Amazon.co.uk Review
Jovial comedy Old School sees three thirtysomething friends with woman troubles (Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn) deciding to form a college fraternity. It's supposedly to save Wilson from losing his house, which the nearby college is trying to claim for academic purposes, but really Ferrell and Vaughn are desperate to return to the reckless, feckless days of beer bongs and hot chicks, and they drag Wilson along with them as they throw themselves into gathering frat pledges of all ages. Old School could have been just another string of bad jokes hanging on a flimsy plot, but the script and the cast have energy and just enough grounding in reality--at least, up until the obligatory beat-the-system ending, but by that point you'll forgive the excesses of this silly, cheerful, and frequently funny movie. Featuring Jeremy Piven and Juliette Lewis, with cameos by Snoop Dog, Andy Dick, and others. --Bret Fetzer

Old School is advertised as a comedy and it is funny for the 90 minutes it runs and always has plenty of action and lively dialogue going on.And the idea of a bunch of people in their late thirties forming a club at a university is fairly original. These are nice guys who never grew up and the world is a brighter place because they didn't and your day will be brighter if you watch this film.

average but different romantic comedyReview date: 2008-04-13 Rating: 6 out of 10Renowned comedy actors Will Ferrell (Blades of Glory) Luke Wilson (Blue Streak) and Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers) star in this comedy drama about a couple of middle aged men trying to recapture their college days.
When reading the back of the DVD I thought I knew what would happen and knew the kind of genre but I was wrong.
Though the film follows many conventions such as love, embarrassing situations, stereotypes and a basic plot, there were still many surprises in stall to make it an interesting watch.
As in most comedies, the central character has to overcome various obstacles to find himself. Wilson's character Mitch is struggling with relationships after coming home to find his girlfriend caught up in a bizarre sex situation. On moving out he starts to realize how hard life is being single. With an ounce of predictability, this storyline is slow moving, focusing on the character, which was good enough but the situations could have been stronger and longer to give the character more depth.
Vince Vaughn's character is very annoying and selfish and is frustrating to watch at points. Ferrell's character is good to watch as he is the funniest out of the free, especially the streak scene.
With a strong focus upon sex, there are a few humorous moments involving carrots, streaking, dolls and naked wrestling this film is focused towards an older more mature audience.
The plot is average. Situations needed more explanation and depth but had a reasonably good focus upon divorce, love and life.
Jokes are often predictable but are often still funny. Acting and direction is good enough to justify the genre. The ending was slightly bizarre but otherwise its an ok film, slightly different from conventional love stories.
6.5/10Funniest film EVER!!Review date: 2008-02-02 Rating: 10 out of 10This is the funniest film of all time. Full stop.
I bought it when my friend recommended it very highly to me- and I am SO glad I did!! I have lent it to many other people (with all very different film tastes) and every single one of them absolutely loved it.
I am a total movie buff and like all sorts of films from the obscure to the blockbusters- from artistic masterpieces to plain stupid comedies...
I have watched this film more times than I can possibly remember and trust me when I say YOU WILL LOVE THIS- I can not recommend it highly enough!!ADULTS ACTING LIKE COLLEGE STUDENTSReview date: 2007-05-12 Rating: 8 out of 10Old School is a welcome return all but abandoned by Hollywood for much of the past couple of decades - that of the raucous, cheap laughs for cheap laughs sake, male bonding fraternity picture. It is Animal House, it is Porky's. It is every cliche one comes to expect from such a film - from wild frat parties to girls wrestling in KY jelly. And, strangely enough it delivers... with a good cast and a fresh twist. For the group of guys that assemble to start the fraternity that is the heart of Old School are all in their early to mid thirties. They are family men, they are husbands, they are fathers, they are boyfriends involved in serious relationships. They have all grown up.
Or so thought Mitch Martin (Luke Wilson), the "Godfather" of his return to the dorm comedy. When Mitch returns from a business trip to find that his girlfriend (Juliette Lewis) has been hiding from him a rather unnerving sex life, the guy begins to question the choices he's made in his life. And his friends are there to help. Best friend and self made successful business man Beanie (played with perfect comic timing by Vince Vaughn) suggests they take advantage of Mitch's new found freedom and start a fraternity. And it isn't long before every disillusioned and disenfranchised thirty something wants to join - to either recreate their days or reckless youth, or finally belong after years of being an outsider.
Among these people is Frank the Tank, a character that Will Farrell makes his own. Literally bearing all for the camera. Farrell plays the wild but affable frat brother - the sad clown, the lovable looser. Farrell gets all the best lines, but few a reserved for the sardonic Vaughn. Wilson, to his credit plays it straight, and the supporting cast (including Leah Remini and Arte Lange) is quiet good.
Certainly Old School is not Oscar material. It's not meant to be. This is not a feel good romantic comedy. But it is also not to be dismissed as some insipid throw away college romp. Old School is intentionally sophomoric (all the more so, as it is Todd Phillip's second big studio comedy). It is genuinely funny in parts and a healthy hour and a half reurn to those days of reckless abandonment that many of us dreamed we either had or could get back.
