Series 2 is the best of all
Review date: 2005-10-04 Rating: 10 out of 10
The New Statesman is an absolutely brilliant comedy, with Rik Mayall in superb form as Alan B'Stard - the most right wing Tory MP with the "largest majority". I have just watched all 4 series and I definitely think Series 2 is the best. It shows Alan in full swing as an arrogant Yuppie, dishing insider trading secrets with Stephen Fry's City editor, dealing cocaine, trapping Piers fingers in drawers, discovering oil in Hackney....Superb stuff. Series 2 culminates in the hysterical spoof of the Dallas/"Who shot JR" storyline too. Series 3 suffers from John Major being PM and Series 4 is set in Brussels. For Pure 1980s nostalgia in all its capitalist B'stard glory, this is it.

the new statesman the best oldReview date: 2005-08-20 Rating: 10 out of 10rik mayal is brilliant in this best sitcom that should ave bin in the top 10 sitcomsWhat a B'StardReview date: 2004-02-23 Rating: 8 out of 10The New Statesman, is one of the most underated comedies of all time. Alan B'stard (Ric Mayall) is played to perfection, he is the most evil self obsessed character ever to enter the small screen. He contrasts brilliantly with the ever innocent Piers Fletcher-Dervish, at one point throwing him out of their parlimentary office. His ever "loving" wife Sarah at his side, blackmailing him for all he's worth. The best episode on the DVD, have the guest apperences of, both halfs of that dynamic duo, Stephen Fry and Hugh Lorrie (previously of Jeeves and Wooster and Blackadder), this episode has you laughing from the fist to the last second, a true classic. If you look at it, it is far better value to get the box edition, but if £10 is all you have i can't think of a better way to spend it.
