A comedy that's funny
Review date: 2006-10-24 Rating: 6 out of 10

This is not the best thing that Rik Mayall has done, but it is not bad.

Mayall is a good comedy actor in this type of character, i.e. manic! However, the character of B'stard is like a pantomime villain - so utterly devoid of remorse, that there is nothing he wouldn't do to get his own way.

Most of the other characters, including B'stards political and personal foes are just as unlikeable too, so you don't really know who you should be rooting for. As well as this the plots are thin and predictable.

However, having said that, this is supposed to be a comedy, and it's funny and has laugh-out-loud moments, so what more can you ask for?

The most machiavellian politician in history?
Review date: 2005-10-13 Rating: 10 out of 10

Imagine the fun you could have watching political haranguing if Alan was really an MP. You'd die laughing! Which, incidentally, I nearly did when watching these DVD's. Alan B'stard has got to be one of the sexiest, funniest, most clever creations ever...To think these guys went on to write Birds of a Feather *shudder*
If you're a fan of the fantastic Rik Mayall, you'll love this. If you like daft political humour, give it a try.
Actually, if you have any sense of humour, give it a try.
I don't think you'll be disappointed.

THIS IS A GREAT COMEDY
Review date: 2005-01-08 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is a fab series full of dark humor and endless laughs!
It tells of an ambitious conservative MP who stops at nothing to gain power. There is no depraved scheme that he would not concoct and no extent to which his upper class snobbery would stretch.
It is a truly wonderful comedy and suits the timeless acting of RIK MAYALL well!!!!

Brilliant Series - Please Release on Region 1
Review date: 2004-09-16 Rating: 10 out of 10

I am an American who spent part of his education boarding at a British Public School and I loved watching this show while I was in the UK. Most Americans only know Rik Mayall from The Young Ones, which is widely available on DVD in the U.S. (it was shown on MTV in the U.S. back in the 1980s on Sunday nights), but I feel The New Statesman is equally as funny. I don't know whether it was ever shown in the states or not, but I would love to get the complete series on DVD for Region 1 (i.e. U.S. compatible).

Region 1 Release?
Review date: 2004-02-23 Rating: 10 out of 10

I have the VHS tapes of the series here in the States-- great show, very entertaining, sort of like a modern Blackadder but more vicious. Will there ever be a Region 1 release of the DVD boxed set over here?
