Amateurish pap

"This has nothing to do with sense!"

So says 'She' halfway through the movie, when faced with the irrefutable home-truth that walking through the poisonous 'forest of death' makes no sense. That kind of mindless response in the place of a decent explanation for the viewer sums up the attitude of the makers of "She". It's a typical low-budget, no-talent sci-fi/fantasy epic gone horribly wrong, and it's main selling point is probably it's campiness and ridiculous gaffs.

The production is cheap and tatty in every corner, and it's made worse by the complete lack of visionary flair on the part of the director. The only 'good' scene in the movie is towards the end when 'She' fights the Norks while wearing a cool disguise(the rest of the film has her parading about in an unflattering skimpy outfit). The script is pithy and rambling in the extreme, the only drama being the successive sticky situations the dopey characters find themselves in, including a rather prolonged scene of whipping and torture on a rack (for s&m lovers out there).

"She" has some imagination, but not the subtance and talent behind it to make it a decent movie, and should only be watched as a mildly entertaining piece of b-movie trash.

Imagination
Review date: 2007-06-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is a surprisingly good example of the 80s post-Mad Max, barbarian queen type entries. It's similar to the earlier 'Logan's Run' in that it is essentially a road movie - the McGuffin being the rescue of the hero's sister from the Nazi-style Norks who kidnap her in the first scene.

What makes the film a cut above the rest is not the acting (atrocious) or the soundtrack (overly intrusive) or the sound editing (variable) but the imagination for the different 'tribes' that are visited - they are all completely different from each other as we progress through the film - making it more like a series of short stories where you never know what to expect next. It's even possible that it may have been conceived as a short TV series - who knows?

Some kind of twist in the plot might have been good but overall a decent couple of hours entertainment.

A Motorhead gem within!

Yeah, the 'She' H. Rider Haggard story is familiar to most and our reviewer below says about everything you need to know; including the comment about Sandhal Bergman who still looks a beaut even today (see 'Conan The Barbarian' and also its 'extras,' which include 'The Making of Conan'). In 1983 when this was being filmed Motorhead were asked to provide some of the music for the soundtrack. They did. It was the Lemmy, Phil Taylor, Brian Robertson line-up and they play the instrumental used two or three times during the battles. A soundtrack album was promised, as Maggie Bell, Justin Hayward, and others also supplied music/songs, but the album didn't happen. Since then it has often been mooted to include this rare Motorhead item within a box-set or whatever, but Lemmy has declined it, and quite rightly, as it "doesn't fit." And it wouldn't. But this DVD is reasonably priced enough for the fans to own it, and the film itself is quite enjoyable, fun, and as ever, Sandahl sees a reason to justifiably take her kit off.

Patchy vehicle

Right, I did not realise this was out on dvd, I watched the video a couple of times. I disagree with the blurb, Standahl Bergman, the eponymus She, does not try to rule the post nuclear holocuast world (or america, as we know it), rather she falls in love with one of the two leading males and agrees to help him rescue his sister from the Norks (New Yorkers-get it?)who carry her off.
She is a goddess who is imortal via some dodgy bathing in a radioactive pool (replete with gartuitous nudity) and some form of regeneration.
As she travels out across the wasteland she meets some other cultures,a group of mutants who literally fall apart, a fundamentalist, Orwelian society built around a male mutant andt a scientist who attempts to experiment on them. All are dealt with to a clagourous rock score (featuring Maggie Bell at her raucous best).
Arriving at Nork they have to deal with a man who can multiply himself then rescue the girl. The end is lame brain and at odds with the continuity of the plot.
To conclude, I'd buy it cuase I like Standahl Bergman. On a more critical level I think on the whole it works it is part of the post star wars/mad max scifi 80's exploitation boom. There are some nice touches-the multiple man, the Orwellian state and the acting isn't bad. I think it looks good too.
