Synopsis

The entire first series of the action-packed dry-witted smash hit cop show of 1970s. They're a classic detective double act, John Thaw is the mature, serious and irritable Regan, while his young partner, Dennis Waterman, is the cheeky cockney Carter who's a hit with the ladies. Part of London's Sweeney Todd the Flying Squad (rhyming slang!) they're called upon to raid villains' homes, particularly when there are semi-clad ladies involved. Regan and Carter face violent clashes and often use firearms and illegal methods to get an arrest. Undoubtedly influenced by movies like GET CARTER this acclaimed, gritty and notably realistic TV series--where police work is not glamorised and the effects on personal relationships of the committed coppers is all too clear--still has resonance, but at the same time is of its time. This package boasts all 13 episodes.

Policing at it really was....

It dont get any better than this. Life on Mars is a pale shadow of this master class in gung-ho Flying Squad crime fighting, hard living, dynamic duo, Regan and Carter. Twelve scintillating episodes, each digitally remastered brilliantly by Network. If you haven't got this one in your collection, then get it now before someone else tells you how good it is.

If you liked "Life On Mars" then you will love this, its so non-pc!!John Thaw was superb, and so is Dennis Waterman. And plenty of super extras, erm, bit of swearing on the commentaries, but that fits in with the era of the series..Enjoy!!

Flying squad classic

It has been a pleasure to watch this series of the Sweeney again with a really clear transfer of the film and improved audio not to mention commentaries from the cast. In a way each classic police series defines the era it originated in - John Thaw and Dennis Waterman show us the seventies through sharply defined scripts, great characters and excellent story lines. The suits, the ties and the cars may have dated but the stories are as good as ever. Give yourself a treat and watch one of the best dramas of its day, without adverts (just the old London Weekend logo now and then)and with much better film quality than the tired repeats seen on TV.

Still the best

This is a fantastic set of 4 discs. Picking an episode at random the other day the words SHUT IT! were spoken after 1min 39secs of the episode starting (even before the opening credits) and I was in TV heaven.

A ground-breaking series by any standards, the worst episodes are good and the best episodes are television of the highest quality. Well-written, sharply directed and the main cast are perfection. Nobody ever drank alcohol like Jack Regan; there was a certain way he swallowed the drink. John Thaw was perfect for this role, a gifted actor who added something special to it. As his sidekick Dennis Waterman was dam good as well.

OK there are a few cliches that run through the series, such as Carter always getting beaten up, but these are small failings, more than compensated for by its brilliance in other areas. For the younger generation this will look old, the cars, the fashion (or lack of it) are all of the time, and unless you were around in the 70's it may be a difficult program stick with. Hopefully "Life on Mars" will have addressed this issue because this is a series that has a lot to say. The endings are frequently downbeat, and of course it had a great opening and closing theme tunes as well.

STEELY JACK LIVES ON - THE SWEENEY ON DVD
Review date: 2005-06-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

This series broke new ground when it was first aired back in the 1970s. It made cult figures of John Thaw and Dennis Waterman as DI Jack Regan and Sgt George Carter. It is simply superb. The transition to DVD had provided a number of pluses, better picture quality through cleaned up master tapes digitally enhanced. It is like seeing the series for the first time. But for me even more interesting is the 'commentaries' - the fascinating insights that the actors, Dennis Waterman, Garfield Morgan and writers, etc, provide when they talk about their involvement in the making of this now cult show. It goes without saying that there is one very sad element to this whole launch on DVD - the fact that the main man John Thaw is no longer with us and therefore was unable to take part in the commentries. Not only is this series an oustanding tribute to his memory but also provides a wonderful legacy to one of the finest screen actors this country ever produced. If you liked the Sweeney first time round, then you are in for a treat.
