Universal's Incredible Hulk: The TV Pilots will satisfy fans of the television series by offering the two-hour 1978 pilot, as well as the feature-length second-season opener, "Married". In bringing the Hulk to TV, series creator Kenneth Johnson decided to focus on its human alter ego, scientist Bruce Banner (here renamed David), rather than the creature's rampages. In the pilot, Banner (Bill Bixby) is haunted by the death of his wife and unleashes his untapped rage in the form of a monstrous creature (Lou Ferrigno) after experimenting with radiation. And in "Married", Banner falls for a researcher (Mariette Hartley in an Emmy-winning performance) who attempts to cure his "hulk-outs". Johnson's solid scripting and direction and fine performances from the leads made the series a critical and audience favourite during its network run. --Paul Gaita

THE INCREDIBLE HULK - best superhero series ever!
Review date: 2003-09-08 Rating: 8 out of 10

I bought this because I wanted to see Married, the 2nd pilot which I had never seen before. By this time, Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno had settled well into their roles of Dr. David Banner and his rage-induced alter-ego The Hulk. This is a human interest story, in which Banner befriends a psychiatrist Carolyn Fields who he thinks can help control his transformations with her hypnotherapy treatment. However, she is dying of an incurable disease, and her relationship with David leads to tragedy. This was a good, well-acted episode and I liked the scenes with David and The Hulk in the desert.
The pilot too is very good, showing us how David Banner first became The Incredible Hulk. The good news for UK fans of the series is that later this year, a series box-set will be released, containing 18 episodes of the series, including Prometheus (The Hulk is captured and taken to a military base), Dark Side (David/Hulk becomes capable of murder) and The First (The Hulk battles with an evil creature).

A good way to see how it all began
Review date: 2003-08-30 Rating: 6 out of 10

I bought this DVD just to see how the story of the Hulk all began. The first episode on the DVD was used as the original pilot for the 1st series of the Incredible Hulk. The second episode was used as the pilote for the 2nd series. I think that fans of the series would prefer the first episode because it shows us how and why Dr. David Bruce Banner metamorphises into the "Hulk". Picture quality is fine and the sound is okay, but the extras are quite thin, consisting of 3 features from the film "Hulk".There is also a commentary by Lou Ferrigno for both the episodes. Overall it's a must for all fans of the series.
