Amazon.co.uk Review

Steven Spielberg produced this underwhelming 1986 effort at a slapstick spin on Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. The pre-Oscar Tom Hanks stars with Shelley Long as a married couple whose efforts to finish construction on their home are sabotaged by costly and sporadically funny accidents. The unfinished domicile becomes a metaphor for their troubled relationship, as evidenced by the attraction of Long's character to a madman violinist (Alexander Godunov). Hanks is the only reason at this point to check this film out. Richard Benjamin (My Favorite Year) directs but with no flair or distinction. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

funny? You must be joking.

I saw this film some time ago, and frankly can't remember very much about it, except that I could see no connection between this and the original version 'Mr Blandings builds his dreamhouse'; the original was after all a comedy. Perhaps I should re-aquaint myself with this effort, maybe the grey cells have deteriorated through several years of more recent tosh to make this seem hilarious today. I am prepared to change my mind, but don't hold your breath.

The Money Pit - A Classic
Review date: 2005-09-15 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film will have you ROLLING around with laughter. It simply is THAT funny. Particularly special moments are the: The turkey flying, the ever decreasing stairs, the dissappearing carpet (and the endless song that ensued). Special homage should be paid to both Hanks and Long who play what can only be described as 'A blinder' in this film. A true true comic piece of film history. BUY IT!

The Money Pit - It Says It All!
Review date: 2005-09-07 Rating: 8 out of 10

Me and my brothers watched The Money Pit when we were kids and loved it. I bought it recently not really knowing if I'd feel the same way about it as an adult but was glad to find it as I remembered.

Shelly Long and a very young looking Tom Hanks are a couple in love who, in desperate need of somewhere to live, put all their money into buying a very large house for a bargain price - only to find it not quite up to their expectations.

How the pressure of their evaporating dreams coupled with Shelly's ever-present and over-bearing ex-husband effects their relationship is the basis of the movie - and it's very funny to watch. There are some really great, very colourful characters interspersed throughout, resulting in some great comedy. There's also a lot of slap-stick which even if it's not your usual cup-of-tea would be hard not to enjoy. We came away with a real urge to watch some Laurel and Hardy!

Enjoy this movie - and remember it's underlying lesson .... If it sounds too good to be true - it probably is!

Classic comedy
Review date: 2004-09-07 Rating: 10 out of 10

Ths film is fantastic if you have ever had the pleasure of living in a house in its twilight years you will relate to this film. The incidents which occur within the house are realistic and will make you laugh. For example when the staircase decides to retire, the bath falls through the floor and Tom Hanks experiences of dodgy workman are classic and will make you laugh for days after!! This is one of those films that you will laugh at time and time again.

Tom Hanks at his BEST
Review date: 2003-11-05 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is one of those films that you've heard of but never got round to watching. Well, that was me until I watched it one day as there was "nothing else on". What did I discover? One of the funniest films I've EVER seen. Story: Toms Hanks & wife buy lovely too-good-to-be-true mansion for pennies. They move in, it falls apart. As does their marriage. Watch out for the flying turkey and the BEST domino effect scene you'll ever see.
