Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!
Review date: 2006-10-26 Rating: 10 out of 10
This DVD is a fantastic intro to Pilates for anyone who wants to try it and is also a great longer weekly work out if you have had some experience. I combine this workout once a week with the two shorter workouts from the 'Shape Up' DVD. The session is broken down into the Warm Up (27 Mins), Main Workout (43 Mins) and a Wind Down (5 Mins). Any of these workouts can be done on their own if you don't have enough time for it all in one go.
The exercises that are covered are very comprehensive covering all areas of the body from head to toe from a standing, seated or lying down position. Lynne Robinson, is a great teacher explaining each individual action fully.
Unlike Yoga which can be a bit intimidating, Pilates is a simple, easy, relaxing way to incorporate much needed stretching into your exercise routine and this DVD is valuable for any fitness level.

Superb intro to Pilates -- if you want real results, start slow, start hereReview date: 2006-07-04 Rating: 10 out of 10After injury to my back & a difficult pregnancy (severe separation of pubic bones), my physiotherapist suggested I hold off on returning to my years-long yoga habit and try Pilates. I was deeply skeptical of making the shift, as many long-time devotees of one kind of exercise/meditation can be. But injury prevailed and I followed my physio's advice.
I did my physio's pilates-based routine, but also bought about 5 DVDs and videos of various pilates teachers and styles to see which one worked for me best. Some were quite good though a bit limited, others caused serious pain because they were trying to be entertaining or flashy or the instructor was showing off. I didn't believe for a minute that anyone in those tapes had ever had back or other serious pain, or had ever exercised after surgery or while overweight -- and I just didn't believe they really knew what it was like trying these routines for the first time. Their explanations seemed to be for the already initiated and relatively healthy body. They all looked like former dancers or gymnasts on their second career. Their routines showed little sympathy for the normal human body working through pain.
This DVD is completely different! This instructor is different -- she suffered from long-time back pain and headaches and knows where many of us will be coming from.
I feel like I can now truly understand what all the Pilates hype has been about. The instrustor's direction is superb, the exercises properly sequenced to avoid stresses and strain. I feel like this is not just an exercise DVD, but an instructional one.
If you want to learn the safest and most productive way to do pilates -- you cannot do better than this.
I'm not throwing out my other DVDs and videos, but now when I go back to them, I will really know how to position my body for optimal effect.
If you only get one, this one should be it.
